050001  12:58 AM:  Reckless Damage or Destruction: Officers responded to the University Gardens Apartments regarding a vehicle that struck the side of one of the apartment buildings.  Damage to the landscaping in the area was observed.  No obvious damage to the building could be seen.  A student was identified as causing the damage and will be referred to the Judicial Officer.  Closed.

050002  2:26 AM:  Disturbance (non-criminal):  Officers responded to a fight in progress call at the University Gardens Apartments.  Officers made contact with a student who said he and his girlfriend had a verbal argument.  The student will be referred to the Judicial Officer.  Closed.

050003  12:41 PM:  Reckless Damage or Destruction/Criminal Trespass:  A student reported that his non-affiliated ex-girlfriend entered his unoccupied apartment without his consent.  The ex-girlfriend left the area before police were contacted.  The student damaged a wall in the apartment during the incident.  The student will be referred to the Judicial Officer.  Closed.

050004  3:20 PM:  Fraudulent Use or Possession of Identifying Information:  A student reported that someone used her checking account information and made fraudulent charges at off campus locations totaling $1450.00.  Open.

050005  11:20 PM:  Criminal Mischief:  A student reported that someone attempted to force open her front door at the Binkley Avenue Apartments causing damage estimated at $400.00.  Open.

050006  12:09 AM:  Assist Other Agency:  Officers contacted Dallas PD regarding a student who wanted to report off campus drug activity.  Closed.

050007  1:56 AM:  Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle (Auto Theft):  A student reported that her vehicle was stolen from the parking lot located at 3120 Daniel Avenue.  Estimated value of the stolen vehicle is $14, 290.00.  The vehicle was recovered unoccupied by Addison PD on 01/10/05.  The tires and rims were missing from the vehicle.  Open.


January 4

050008  8:35 AM:  Medical Response:  Officers and UPEMS responded to a sick staff member in the 2900 block of Binkley Avenue.  Closed.

050009  9:00 AM:  Medical Response:  Officers and UPEMS responded to an injured construction worker in the 3100 block of Binkley Avenue.  Closed.

050010  9:26 AM:  Criminal Mischief:  A student reported that someone damaged a tire on her vehicle while parked in the Commuter Lot.  Damage is estimated at $150.00.  Closed.


January 5

050011  1:29 AM:  Fire Alarm:  Officers and UPFD responded to a fire alarm at the Perkins Administration Building.  The alarm was caused when a machine used to buff the floors malfunctioned producing smoke.  Closed. 

050012  3:40 PM:  Burglary of Habitation/Criminal Mischief:  A student reported that someone entered the Lambda Chi Alpha house and stole bronze plaque bearing the fraternity's coat of arms.  A large hole was also found in one of the walls on the first floor.  Open.

050013  4:02 AM:  Administrative Information Report:  Officers provided a civil standby in Kirby Hall, at the request of faculty member, regarding a former student who had been disruptive during a previous contact.  The student did not show up for the meeting and officers cleared without incident.  Closed.


January 6

050014  8:20 AM:  Criminal Mischief:  A student reported that someone threw eggs at the Kappa Alpha Theta house. Closed.

050015  4:19 AM:  Fire:  Officers responded to a fire in the Fincher Building.  A staff member was using a space heater under her desk that flipped over and caught on fire.  The fire was extinguished.  The carpet sustained minimal damage.  Closed.


January 7 

050016  1:28 AM:  Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor/Possession of a Fictitious License or ID:  Two students were contacted in the 6200 block of Bishop Boulevard.  Both students had the odor of alcohol on their breaths and were identified as underage.  Both students were also in possession of a counterfeit driver's license.  The students will be referred to the Judicial Officer for the violation.  Closed.

050017  2:17 AM:  Driving While Intoxicated Officers stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation in the 5800 block of Airline Road.  The driver was identified as a student and determined to be intoxicated.  The student was arrested and transported to UP Jail.  The student was also issued a court citation for being in possession of a counterfeit driver's license.  The student will also be referred to the Judicial Officer.  Closed.

050018  5:00 PM:  Burglary of Vehicle:  A student reported that someone stole a stereo from his vehicle while parked in the 3000 block of Binkley.  The driver's side window was shattered during the theft.  The value of the stolen property is $400.00.  Closed.


January 8

050019  2:16 AM:  Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor/Possession of a Fictitious License or ID:  An officers observed a student carrying a traffic cone and construction pylon in the 3100 block of Binkley Avenue.  The officer made contact with the student who had the odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath.  The student is under 21 years of age and also had a counterfeit driver's license in his possession.  The student will be referred to the Judicial Officer.  Closed.

050020  2:16 AM:  Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor/Disturbance (non-criminal):  Officers responded to a disturbance in the 3000 block of Daniel Avenue regarding a man and woman arguing.  Officers made contact with a non-affiliated man sitting in his vehicle in the alley.  The man had the odor of alcohol on his breath and is underage.  The man also had a counterfeit driver's license in his possession.  He was issued a court citation for the violation.  The man called his girlfriend, a student, to pick him up.  The student arrived and also had the odor of alcohol on her breath and is underage.  The student was issued a court citation and will also be referred to the Judicial Officer.  Closed.

050021 5:24 AM:  Criminal Mischief:  An officer on patrol in Virginia Hall reported that someone damaged two bulletin boards on the first floor.  Open.

050022  2:23 PM:  Burglary of Vehicle/False Report to a Peace Officer:  A student reported that someone stole a flip-down television from his vehicle while parked in the 3000 block of Dyer.  Investigation revealed that the vehicle had actually been burglarized at an off campus bar.  The Burglary of Vehicle report is unfounded.  The student will be referred to the Judicial Officer for False Report to a Peace Officer.  Closed.

050023  9:56 PM:  Burglary of Habitation:  A student reported that between 12/12/04 and 01/08/05 someone entered his room at Peyton Hall and stole two shirts and three textbooks.  The value of the property stolen is $350.00.  Open.

January 9

050024  9:50 AM:  Theft - Class A ($500-1499):  A faculty member reported that someone stole his laptop computer case and a zip drive from his unsecured office in the Greer Garson Theater.  Open.

050025  6:20 PM:  Code of Conduct Violation:  A staff member reported that someone pointed a laser pointer at her as she was driving in the 3000 block of Binkley Avenue.  An officer responded and saw a student holding a black pistol down by his side.  The officer also observed an orange tip on the pistol indicating it was a toy pistol.  The officer made contact with the student, seized the toy pistol and will be referred the student to the Judicial Officer for the policy violation.  Closed.


January 10

050026  1:07 PM:  Field Interview:  Officers made contact with a student in the 3000 block of Daniel Avenue who appeared to be staggering.  The student was feeling ill and was escorted to his residence on campus.  Closed.

050027  1:47 PM:  Disorderly Conduct:  A staff member reported that a student entered his office in the Blanton Student Services Building demanding information concerning a loan check.  The student was belligerent and used profanity toward the staff member and others in the area.  The student will be referred to the Judicial Officer.  Closed.

050028  12:44 PM:  University Alcohol Policy Violation:  A student was observed drinking an alcoholic beverage in the 3000 block of Daniel Avenue during a sorority event.  The student is 21 years of age and will be referred to the Judicial Officer for the violation.  Closed.

050029  2:00 PM:  Assist Other Agency:  SMU Police were notified of an off campus incident that occurred on January 7, 2005.  An evening law student reported another student communicated a threat to him that he had intended on directing to students of the evening law classes.  Dallas Police and SMU Police are investigating. A search for the man is continuing.  Open.

050030 7:55 PM:  Possession of Fictitious License or ID:  A wallet belonging to a student was turned in to the Police Department.  The wallet contained a counterfeit ID.  The student will be referred to the Judicial Officer.  Closed.

050031  10:18 PM:  Possession of Alcohol by a Minor:  Officers responded to a noise complaint in Peyton Hall.  Two students were contacted and found to be in possession of 3 cans of beer.  Both students are underage.  The students will be referred to the Judicial Officer for the violation.  Closed.

050032  11:28 PM:  Assault/Theft-Class A ($500-1499)/Credit Card or Debit Abuse:  A student in one of the residence halls on campus reported that she was assaulted by her non-affiliated spouse.  The suspect also stole her wallet and made fraudulent charges against her bank account.  Open.


January 11

050033  1:27 AM:  Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor/Possession of Alcohol by a Minor/Loud Noise Complaint:  Officers responded to a loud noise complaint at 3130 Daniel Avenue.  Officers made contact with a student who was visiting a resident of the apartments.  The student had the odor of alcohol on his breath and admitted to consuming six beers.  He was also observed holding a can of beer.  The student will be referred to the Judicial Officer.  The resident of the apartment will also be referred to the Judicial Officer.  Closed.

050034  1:52 AM:  Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor/Criminal Mischief/Possession of Fictitious License or ID:  Three students were contacted at the Phi Gamma Delta house regarding property and trash that was thrown into the Beta house backyard.  A light fixture on the Beta house was also broken.  All three students had the odor of alcoholic beverages on their breaths and are underage.  All three were in possession of counterfeit IDs.  The students will be referred to the Judicial Officer.  Closed.

050035  2:17 AM:  Possession of Alcohol by a Minor/Loud Noise Complaint:  Officers responded to a noise complaint at the Binkley Avenue Apartments.  A student resident was observed holding two cans of beer.  The student is underage and will be referred to the Judicial Officer.  Closed.

050036  3:26 AM:  Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor/Fire/Fire Safety Violation:  Officers and UPFD responded to a fire alarm at the Sigma Chi House.  Smoke was observed coming from a second floor room.  Officers contacted the resident of the room who said he was smoking a cigarette and fell asleep causing a pile of clothing to catch on fire.  The student resident also had the odor of alcohol on his breath and is underage.  The student will be referred to the Judicial Officer.  Closed.

050037 10:31 AM:  Theft - Class B $50-499):  A staff member reported that copper tubing was stolen from the roof of the SMU Bookstore.  Open.

050038 10:38 PM:  Burglary of Vehicle:  A student reported that someone stole the stereo from his vehicle while parked in the Dedman 3 Parking Lot.  The value of the stereo is $190.00.  No damage or forced entry was observed.  Open.


January 12

050039  4:03 AM:  Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor/Failure to Identify:  Officers made contact with three students in the 6300 block of Airline.  All had the odor of alcoholic beverages on their breath.  One of the students is underage and was issued a court citation.  One of the students failed to provide legitimate identification to officers.  All will be referred to the Judicial Officer.  Closed.

050040  10:01 AM:  Fire Alarm:  Officers and UPFD responded to a fire alarm at the Alpha Chi Omega house.  The alarm was caused by burned food in the kitchen.  Closed.


January 13

050041  9:30 AM:  HAZMAT Accident or Spill:  A staff member reported that mineral oil was leaking from two transformers that had been loaded into a truck and spilling on to the ground in the 6100 block of Ownby Street.  SMU Risk Management was notified and responded to the scene.  The mineral oil was cleaned up.  Closed.

050042  12:44 PM:  Criminal Trespass Warning:  A non-affiliated man and woman were contacted in the Hughes-Trigg Student Center for soliciting student information for recruiting purposes.  Neither person had received authorization from the university.  Criminal trespass warnings were issued.  The man and woman were escorted from campus.  Closed.

050043  2:25 PM:  Burglary of Vehicle:  A student reported that someone broke into her vehicle while parked in the Commuter Lot.  The driver's side window was shattered to gain entry into the vehicle.  The suspect attempted to steal the student's stereo, but was unsuccessful.  No other property was stolen.  Damage is estimated at $100.00.  Open.

050044  4:46 PM:  Burglary of Vehicle:  A student reported that someone broke into his vehicle while parked in the Dedman 3 Lot.  The driver's side window was shattered to gain entry into the vehicle. A stereo and radar detector were stolen.  Open.

050052  00:36 AM:  Assist Other Agency:  Officers assisted Dallas PD in the 3000 block of SMU Boulevard with a DWI arrest involving a student.  Closed.

050053  00:20 AM:  Sick or Injured Person:  Officers responded to a medical call at Mary Hay Hall involving a student.  Closed.

050054  01:38 AM:  Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor/Possession of Fictitious License or ID:  Officers contacted three students near the Doak Walker Plaza who threw a cup at a passing vehicle.  The three students all had the odor of an alcoholic beverage on their breath and are underage.  One of the students was also in possession of a counterfeit ID.  The three students will be referred to the Judicial Officer.  Closed.

050055  2:08 AM:  Disorderly Conduct/Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor:  An officer on patrol in the Moody Garage observed two male students urinating on a vehicle.  A female student was also standing in the area.  The three students had the odor of alcohol on their breaths and are underage.  The two male students were issued court citations for the violations.  All three will be referred to the Judicial Officer.  Closed.

050056  01:00 AM:  Driving Under the Influence by a Minor/Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor/Possession of Fictitious License or ID:  An officer stopped a vehicle in the 6000 block of Bishop Boulevard on a traffic violation.  Officers contacted the driver, a student, who had the odor of alcohol on his breath and is underage.  He was also in possession of a counterfeit ID.  The passenger also had the odor of alcohol on his breath and is underage.  One student was cited for DUI-Minor.  Both students will be referred to the Judicial Officer for the violations.  Closed.

050057  2:14 AM:  Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor:  Officers made contact with three students in the South Quad Lot who had the odor of alcoholic beverages on their breaths and are underage.  All were issued court citations and will be referred to the Judicial Officer.  Closed.

050058  3:02 AM:  Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor:  Officers made contact with a student in McElvaney Hall who had the odor of alcoholic beverages on her breath and is underage.  The student will be referred to the Judicial Officer.  Closed.

050059  11:57 AM:  Welfare Check on Person:  The mother of a student reported that she had not spoken to her daughter since 01/13/05.  The student was located later in the day.  Closed.


January 18

050060  8:00 AM:  Assist Other Agency:  Officers assisted UPPD in the 3300 block of Rankin with the arrest of a student for attempting to steal a stop sign.  Closed.

050061  10:30 AM:  Burglary of Vehicle A student reported that she observed a Hispanic man break into a vehicle in the Dedman 3 Parking Lot and steal a stereo from the vehicle.  The student also saw another man and woman sitting in a white or silver vehicle acting as lookouts.  The student called the police department, and officers responded to the scene.  The suspects left the area prior to officer arrival.   A vent window was shattered to gain entry into the vehicle.  Open.

050062  11:36 AM:  Burglary of Vehicle A contractor reported that someone broke into his vehicle while parked in the Dedman 3 Parking Lot.  Entry was gained by prying the door handle on the passenger side of the vehicle.  A stereo was stolen.  Open.

050063  2:00 PM:  Criminal Mischief:  A student reported that someone keyed her vehicle while parked in the 2900 block of Binkley Avenue.  Open.

050064  3:25 PM:  Fire Alarm:  Officers responded to a fire alarm at the Alpha Psi Lambda house.  A wire was damaged when a new water heater was installed causing the alarm.  Closed.


January 19

050065  1:18 AM:  Driving Under the Influence by a Minor:  An officer stopped a vehicle in the 3200 block of Binkley Avenue on a traffic violation.  Officers contacted the driver, a student, who had the odor of alcohol on his breath and is underage.  The student was issued a court citation and will be referred to the Judicial Officer.  Closed.

050066  2:11 AM:  Disorderly Conduct/Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor/University Policy Violation:  Officers observed a man on the front porch of the Sigma Chi house shouting obscenities at several people in the area of the Lambda Chi .  Officers conducted a walk-through of the Sigma Chi house.  Six students were contacted regarding this incident. Four of the students had the odor of alcohol on their breaths and were underage.  All will be referred to the Judicial Officer. Closed.

050067  3:03 AM:  Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor/Possession of Alcohol by a Minor/Possession of Fictitious License or ID:  Officers made contact with two students in Boaz Hall.  Both had the odor of alcohol on their breath and are underage.  One of the students also had a bottle of vodka and a bottle of rum in her room. The student was also in possession of a counterfeit ID.  Both students were issued court citations and will be referred to the Judicial Officer.  Closed. 

050068  6:00 AM:  Emergency Evacuation Exercise:  Officers and a member of Fire Safety conducted an emergency evacuation exercise in McElevaney Hall.  Closed.

050069  6:33 AM:  Emergency Evacuation Exercise:  Officers and a member of Fire Safety conducted an emergency evacuation exercise in Morrison and McGinnis Hall.  Closed.

050071  12:55 PM:  Theft - Class A ($500-1499):  A student reported that he left his bag in a taxi that brought him to campus from the airport.  The student called the taxi company, but was told they did not have the property.  The bag contained the student's laptop computer, digital camera, cell phone and mini disc player.  Open.

050072  6:19 PM:  Theft - Class C (Less than $50):  A student reported that someone stole her wallet from a room in the Owens Arts Center.  The student left her wallet unattended.  Open.

050073  2:29 AM:  Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor:  Officers made contact with 3 students during a check of McElevaney Hall who were causing a disturbance.  All three had the odor of alcohol on their breath and are underage.  The three students were issued court citations and will be referred to the Judicial Officer.  Closed.

050074  5:50 AM:  Emergency Evacuation Exercise:  Officers and a member of Fire Safety conducted an emergency evacuation exercise in Shuttles Hall.  Closed.

050075  6:10 AM:  Emergency Evacuation Exercise:  Officers and a member of Fire Safety conducted an emergency evacuation exercise in Virginia-Snider Hall.  Closed.

050078  8:02 AM:  Theft - Class C (Less than $50):  A staff member reported that $48.00 in cash was stolen from a secured area inside the Cinco Center.  A suspect was identified through video footage.  The suspect was contacted by investigators and admitted to stealing the money.  He also admitted to stealing money from the drawer on three other occasions.  The suspect is a contracted employee with cleaning services and was issued a court citation for the violation.  The suspect was also issued a criminal trespass warning for the SMU campus.  Closed. 

050079  10:58 AM:  Vehicle Accident:  A student reported that he was involved in a motor vehicle accident at the Airline Parking Garage.  The parties exchanged insurance information.  Closed.

050080  3:30 PM:  Failure to Leave Identification (at Accident Scene):  A student reported that someone struck her vehicle causing damage while parked in the Moody Garage.  Open.

050081  7:05 PM:  Assist Other Agency:  Officers assisted UPPD with a major accident at Hillcrest Avenue and University Boulevard involving three students and one non-affiliated person.  Closed.

050082  7:54 PM:  Disturbance:  Members of the Sigma Chi fraternity members and Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity members were involved in a verbal altercation in the 3100 block of Binkley.  No criminal offense occurred.  Both houses will be referred to the Judicial Officer for the incident.  Closed.

January 21

050083  12:15 AM:  Disorderly Conduct:  A student reported that several people were throwing water balloons from the fourth floor of Cockrell Hall.  One of the balloons almost struck the student.  The room of the students who were throwing the balloons was identified.  All will be referred to the Judicial Officer.

050084  2:22 AM:  Criminal Mischief:  A student broke a window on the second floor of Boaz Hall.  The student will be referred to the Judicial Officer.  The damage value is $50.00.

050085  2:39 AM:  Assist Other Agency:  Officers assisted HPPD with the arrest of a student for Public Intoxication.  Closed.

050086  3:59 AM:  Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor/Possession of a Fictitious License or ID:  Officers made contact with a student in the 3000 block of SMU Boulevard.  The student had the odor of alcohol on his breath and is underage.  The student was also in possession of a counterfeit ID.  The student was issued a court citation and will also be referred to the Judicial Officer.  Closed.

050087  6:05 AM:  Assault:  A student reported that he was assaulted by a non-affiliated man in the Sigma Alpha Epsilon house.  The non-affiliated suspect fled the scene prior to officer's arrival.  The student later contacted police and said that he does not wish to pursue criminal charges.  Closed.

050088  7:38 AM:  Possession of Marijuana/University Alcohol Policy Violation/Fire Safety Violation:  During a search of the SAE house for the suspect referenced in report 050087,  an officer encountered a bar set up in an unsecured room.  Several bottles of alcohol and cases of beer were observed.  Marijuana was also observed in plain view inside an open filing cabinet drawer.  Officers also observed cigarette butts throughout the hallway on the second floor.  The house will be referred to the Judicial Officer for the violations.

050089  2:08 PM:  Suspicious Person:  A student reported that an unknown man approached her in the 6100 block of Tarry Town located in the University Gardens Apartments.  The man asked the student for a pair of panties.  Another student attempted to restrain the man, but the man fled the scene prior to arrival by police.  A check of the area for the man met with negative results. The man is described as a white, male, 19-25 years old, 5'10", 160 pounds wearing a red polo shirt and a green baseball cap turned backward.  Closed.

050090  2:35 PM:  Burglary of Vehicle A student reported that someone broke into his vehicle while parked in the Dedman 3 Parking Lot.  Entry was gained by breaking a window.  A stereo was stolen.  Open.

050091  7:22 PM:  Burglary of Vehicle A student reported that someone broke into his vehicle while parked in the Dedman 3 Parking Lot.  No signs of forced entry were observed.  A stereo was stolen.  Open.

050092  8:31 PM:  Unauthorized Entry into a Parking Facility:  An officer observed a vehicle enter into the Owens Lot by following another vehicle through the restricted access gate.  The driver was identified as a student and will be referred to the Judicial Officer.  Closed.


January 22

050093  12:51 AM:  Suspicious Person:  Officers responded to the intersection of Binkley Avenue and Bishop Boulevard regarding a white male following female students from off campus.  The female students described the man as being in his 40s, wearing a purple bra, pink panties and high heels, driving a newer model Chevy truck.  A check of the area by officers met with negative results.

050094  12:31 AM:  Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor/Medical Call:  Officers responded to a student passed out in a vehicle in the Owens Lot.  A female student was contacted. The student had the odor of alcohol on her breath and is underage.  The student will be referred to the Judicial Officer.  Closed.

050160  6:00 PM:  Assault A female student told SMU police she was accosted about 6 p.m. Saturday as she walked between the Varsity Tennis Courts and Moody Coliseum on the east side of campus near Binkley Avenue.  She said the individual first shouted at her from behind, then approached her rapidly and began walking beside her, making inappropriate comments about her appearance and soliciting sex. She described the suspect as a young, light-skinned African American male of slender build.  She said he was about 19 years old and about 5 feet 11 inches tall with very short hair.  He was wearing a black T-shirt with silver letters, black basketball-style shorts, black shoes and a black head band.  See the Campus Alert dated 01/29/05 located at www.smu.edu/pd.  Open.
