Before entering your car: Keep your car in good working order and the gas tank at least half full. Scan around it; take a look inside (front and back seat). Consider installing an auto burglar alarm system. Have your keys ready when approaching your car to reduce entry time.
Once inside: Lock the doors before you buckle your seat belts. If a stranger approaches you while in your car, keep the windows rolled up, doors locked and engine running. Honk your horn if you need to attract attention.
While driving: Always drive with all the doors locked. Be observant for dangerous situations in all directions. Never pick up hitchhikers. Report strange motorist to law enforcement. When stopped in traffic or at a light, keep your car in drive and stay alert. If your vehicle becomes disabled, use your flashers and remain inside with the doors locked. If you are followed, drive to a busy, public place that is safe and call 911. Never allow the assailant to follow you home. If you can afford a cellular phone, always take it with you when you are driving.
While exiting your car: Park in well-lighted areas at night. Always lock your car when leaving. Don’t leave anything valuable in your car, if all possible. Exercise extra caution when using underground and enclosed parking garages. Avoid going alone to these areas.
