Virtually all activities in life entail some level of risk and the attitude toward risk vary greatly among people. One person may refuse to engage in an activity due to what they perceive as a high level of risk involved. In contrast, another may engage in very risky activities while refusing to take any precaution. Neither of these attitudes is useful for living an empowered life. What is useful is to accurately assess the risk of each activity, take the necessary precautions and live as fully as possible.
Here are three simple rules that will not guarantee your safety, but can greatly minimize criminal opportunities.
STAY ALERT: Tune in to your surroundings, wherever you are. Don’t be taken by surprise. Be aware. Be prepared.
STAND TALL: Walk with confidence and purpose. Don’t show fear. Don’t look like a victim.
TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS: If you don’t feel comfortable in a place or situation, leave right away and ask for help, if necessary.
