Safety Around Campus

·        Never leave valuables (i.e., cell phones, laptop computers, purses, coats, etc.) unattended in libraries, cafeterias, rest rooms or other public places.

·        Avoid walking alone. Walk in groups.  Call Campus Police at 214-768-3388 for an escort.

·        If you absolutely have to walk alone, plan your route ahead of time and walk in well-lighted areas. Don’t take short cuts and call the person expecting you to let them know that you are on your way. Don’t take rides from strangers.

·        Only carry sufficient cash for your immediate needs, never let anyone see your PIN number when entering it on an ATM. Never carry your PIN number with your credit cards. Avoid using the ATM at night. Plan ahead and conduct your transactions during the daylight hours.

·        Be aware of your surroundings and be alert for potential danger. Trust your instincts and take action before trouble starts.  Think ahead and have a plan of action for an emergency situation. Walk with confidence and keep a firm grip on your book bag, purse or briefcase.

·        Know the location of campus emergency phones (Blue Lights) and how to use them.

·        Always lock your door. Never compromise your safety for a roommate who may ask you to leave the door unlocked.

·        Know your neighbors and don't be reluctant to report illegal activities and suspicious loitering.  If a person doesn’t live in your building, they shouldn’t be there unescorted.

·        Don’t keep doors propped open.

·        Don’t let strangers and non-residents enter the building on your access.
