Personal Safety

SMU has a safe campus where personal safety is a constant concern.  By taking reasonable precautions, you can reduce your chance of becoming a victim.

·        Never leave computers, cell phones, purses, coats, etc. unattended in libraries, cafeterias, rest rooms or other public places.

·        Safety in numbers: Avoid walking alone at night. Travel in groups.  Call Campus Police 214-768-3388 for an escort. They are happy to assist you.

·        If you absolutely have to walk alone, plan your route ahead of time. Walk in well-lighted areas.  Don’t take short cuts and call the person that is expecting you to let them know that you are on your way. Never accept rides from strangers.

·        Be alert: Always be aware of your surroundings and the potential for danger. Trust your instincts and take action before trouble starts. Have a plan of action for an emergency situation.  Appear confident when you walk and keep a firm grip on your book bag, purse or briefcase.
