Crime Prevention

Definition of Crime Prevention

“ The anticipation, recognition, and appraisal of a crime risk and the initiation of action to remove or reduce it.”

It is to be expected that all officers of the SMU Police Department and members of our community have a responsibility to make crime prevention a part of their daily routine. Whether it is the officer on patrol who stops to remind a student of the risk of leaving his/her laptop computer unattended or the staff member who calls 911 to report suspicious activity in their area, everyone has a part to play in preventing crime.

The SMU Police Department has an active and committed Crime Prevention section. Through the use of video presentations, lectures, self-defense classes, security surveys and other crime prevention programs. The SMU Police Department and its Crime Prevention Section works to accomplish 3 major goals:

       1.       To prevent criminal activity or to reduce its frequency

       2.       To increase protection for the student, faculty, and staff their colleagues and property

       3.       To increase reporting of potential criminal activity

We encourage the students, faculty and staff to be responsible for their own security and the security of others by participating and taking advantage of the training programs and services offered by the Department.
