Sorority House Burglars Captured

Residents of a sorority house in the 3100 block of Daniel Avenue reported seeing two men on the second floor of the residence about 3:15 a.m. Wednesday and summoned SMU police.  No residents were harmed by the intruders, who fled the scene.

Through evidence found in the house, police were able to arrest the two men and have charged them with burglary of a habitation, a second degree felony.  The men, both about 30 years old, are not affiliated with SMU.

During the investigation, police learned that the electronic lock on the front door may have been disabled by a resident, preventing the door from locking automatically.  This allowed the men to enter with ease.

SAFETY TIPS

  • Never leave doors or windows unlocked.  They are your first line of defense.
  • Never disable or circumvent security systems at your residence.
  • If a door lock in your residence is not working properly, contact the SMU Police Department immediately and a locksmith will be dispatched to make repairs.
  • If you observe a suspicious or unknown person in or near your residence, call police immediately with as detailed of a description as possible.  Any delay in calling police makes it more difficult for them to apprehend suspects.
  • If you’re driving into a parking lot and observe someone suspicious, take note of his description and call police.  Never leave your car until the police arrive and drive away if necessary.
  • Sign up and take a crime prevention class through the Wellness Program.  For information, contact Lt Rico Jemmott at 214/768-2607.
