AUGUST 2008
Welcome, Mustangs
New students attending Mustang Corral 2008 began moving in to their residence halls August 20 as parents provided MVP assistance with boxes, bags and decorating touches. Outside, the SMU Mothers' and Dads' Clubs passed out free cold drinks to beat the Texas heat. Residence halls officially opened August 23, with floor meetings and Common Reading discussions on the weekend's activity schedule. • See

At send-off parties across the country this summer, incoming SMU students and their parents connected with fellow SMU families who live in or near their hometowns. Nearly 20 parties were hosted by SMU parents in cities including Los Angeles, Chicago, Denver, Houston, Minneapolis and St. Louis. If you would like information about next year's parties, contact Christi Contreras, director of Parent Giving, 214-768-4746. • See

Access to Education RecordsUnder the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), the release of student education records by a college or university to a third party, including parents, is generally prohibited without the student’s written permission. Many students want to give parents or family members access to these records so that they can work in partnership in advancing the student’s well-being and academic progress. To facilitate the sharing of information, SMU offers an easy method for students to grant permission and for parents to access education records online at Access.SMU. • Letter

For more than 30 years, SMU moms, dads, students and siblings have participated in the University's Family Weekend, celebrating longstanding traditions and launching new ones. Set this fall for September 19-21, the weekend will include a luncheon co-sponsored by the Mothers' Club, barbecue co-sponsored by the Dads' Club, departmental open houses, student talent show and tailgating on the Boulevard before kickoff against TCU. The Family Weekend registration book, containing a full schedule, was mailed to parents in June. More information also will be posted on the Student Foundation Web site. • Download a PDF copy of the registration book.
In the current job market, it’s important to negotiate for more than just salary. Troy Behrens advises students to negotiate their career development and growth, as well. Read more.
EXPRESS CA$H allows students to make purchases on and off campus using their SMU ID card. Now parents can go online to make quick and convenient deposits to their student’s account using a credit card. With EXPRESS CA$H, students can purchase food, postal services, textbooks and more, including meals at nearby restaurants such as La Madeleine and Jimmy John’s. Students also can manage their accounts online, including balance inquiries, transaction histories and reporting lost or stolen cards. Visit ponyexpress.smu.edu to make deposits and learn more.
No car? No problem. SMU/DART Transit Pass stickers good through December 31, 2008 are now available in the Park 'N Pony Office at the Hughes-Trigg Student Center. Enrolled students should bring their SMU ID and current transit pass to the office between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. weekdays. The SMU/DART transit passes allow unlimited free rides on Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) buses and trains, as well as on the Trinity Railway Express (TRE) between Dallas and Fort Worth and on The T, operated by the Fort Worth Transportation Authority. There is no charge for renewals; new passes and replacements cost $5. Learn more at smu.edu/parknpony. In addition, SMU's Outdoor Adventure Center now offers a Bike Lease Program. Single-speed cruisers are available to students on a first-come, first-served basis for a $10 annual fee, which includes preventive maintenance and minor repairs. The program is made possible by a gift from Christopher ('96) and Jennifer Miller. For additional lease terms and other information, visit the Bike Lease Program page.
