SMU Move-In Day 2008

New students attending Mustang Corral 2008 began moving in to their residence halls August 20 as parents provided MVP assistance with boxes, bags and decorating touches. Outside, the SMU Mothers' and Dads' Clubs passed out free cold drinks to beat the Texas heat. Residence halls officially opened August 23, with floor meetings and Common Reading discussions on the weekend's activity schedule.

Common Reading: Life and Death on the U.S.-Mexico Border

Cover of 'The Devil's Highway' by Luis Alberto UrreaIn May 2001, 26 Mexican men searching for work in America risked an illegal border crossing in Arizona’s brutal Sonoran Desert. Only 12 survived. Their stories – and those of the people who aided, pursued or betrayed them – are at the center of Luis Alberto Urrea’s The Devil’s Highway, SMU’s 2008 Common Reading Experience.

Access to Education Records

Under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), the release of student education records by a college or university to a third party, including parents, is generally prohibited without the student’s written permission.

Many students want to give parents or family members access to these records so that they can work in partnership in advancing the student’s well-being and academic progress. To facilitate the sharing of information, SMU offers an easy method for students to grant permission and for parents to access education records online at Access.SMU.
