What is AARO?
AARO is the first step of the orientation process at SMU. It is a two-day program for both First Year and First-Year
Transfer students who will be enrolling in Fall 2009 at SMU. There are
also three one-day sessions for Transfer students. All sessions are
designed to offer information to assist you in your transition to Southern
Methodist University. Programs
provide academic requirements and expectations, campus
resources, involvement opportunities and the chance to meet current students. During your AARO session, you will
also meet one-on-one
with an academic advisor and register for fall classes.
When is AARO?
AARO Sessions: July 1-2, 6-7, 9-10, 13-14, 17-18, 20-21, 22-23, 27-28,
July 31-August 1, August 5-6.
Each of the 10 AARO sessions will accommodate approximately 120 new students
and their family members. All new students are required to stay overnight in
Boaz Hall during AARO. Staying on campus provides an opportunity to experience
residence hall living at SMU and to interact with the AARO Leaders also living
in Boaz Hall. Limited on-campus family housing is also available.
Breakfast, lunch and
dinner will be provided on the first day and breakfast and lunch on the second
day. Confirmation of your assigned date will be emailed upon the completion of
your registration process. Please verify this information
carefully. Students who arrive late or on an incorrect AARO date cannot be
accommodated.
How much does AARO
cost?
First Year and First-Year Transfer students will be a charged a $300 Orientation
Fee and Transfer students will be charged a $150 fee. The Orientation Fee
covers programs such as AARO,
Mustang Corral, and the Encore Series. The fee appears on your first
tuition bill after you enroll in classes. Any fees associated with AARO for additional housing
and guests will charged on your student account shortly after the semester
begins.
What is the cost for a
guest/family member to attend AARO?
The fee for family members and/or additional guests accompanying students to
AARO is $60 each. This fee includes five meals as well as all of the
publications received over the two-day session.
Which AARO do I attend if I’m an International student
or an American student living abroad?
All students studying in secondary schools outside the United States,
including U.S. citizens, are recommended to attend the two-day International
AARO on August 17-18. If you are unable to attend the International AARO, you
may select any of the July sessions that is conducive to your travel
arrangements. All students that attend the two-day International AARO will be
required to attend Mustang Corral in August 21-23.
Where will I be staying?
