Memorial Service Set for Student Who Died in Floods

A memorial services for Xin Du, 22, an SMU graduate student who died in floods that swept the Dallas area on Sunday, March 19, is scheduled for 6 p.m. Sunday at Restland Funeral Home on Restland Road at Greenville Avenue north of I-635.

The Southern Methodist University Chinese Students’ Association and Global Connections (the SMU organization of international students) have established a memorial fund for Ms. Du. Donations may be made to the Xin Du Memorial Fund at the SMU International Center, The Blanton Student Services Building, Suite 216.

The University mourns Ms. Du's tragic death and extends its condolences to her family in Shanghai, China.

Ms. Du came to SMU in January 2006 and was pursuing a Ph. D in molecular and cell biology. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in biotechnology from Wuhan University in Wuhan, China.

Her professors at SMU described Ms. Du as an excellent student with a strong spirit.
