Two Major Exhibits Open at SMU

The fashion designs of Cristóbal Balenciaga and
the musical works of the Wesley Family go on display

Southern Methodist University is hosting two important exhibitions beginning in early February – the creations of Spanish-born fashion pioneer Cristóbal Balenciaga and the religious musical works of the talented Wesley family.

The first U.S. exhibition in more than 20 years of the pioneering fashion designs of Cristóbal Balenciaga will be presented at the Meadows Museum Feb. 4 through May 27, 2007.

“Balenciaga and His Legacy: Haute Couture from the Texas Fashion Collection” will showcase 70 of the Spanish-born designer’s works spanning his most creative period from 1949 to 1968. The Meadows is the only venue for the show.

In honor of the tercentenary of the birth of Charles Wesley, Bridwell Library will stage the exhibition “Sacred Harmony: The Musical Wesley Family,” from Feb. 1 to April 28, 2007, in The Elizabeth Perkins Prothro Galleries at Bridwell Library.

Beginning with the parents of John and Charles Wesley, the exhibition focuses on four generations of the Wesleys and their contributions to the development of worship-music and concert and cathedral music in England. The exhibition will also offer opportunities for hearing music of the Wesleys at listening stations in the galleries.
