Awards Extravaganza 2006 - News and Communications

Receiving the "M" Award, SMU's most prestigious honor, are five faculty and staff members and 10 students (see below) whose contributions to the University are "above and beyond the call of duty." Faculty and staff recipients include:

• Jo Goyne, senior lecturer in English and director of First-Year Writing
• Jenna Hyatt, associate director of Residence Life and Student Housing
• Judy Henneberger, assistant chaplain and campus minister for SMU Catholic Campus Ministries
• Jasper Neel, professor of English and retiring dean of Dedman College
• John Ubelaker, professor of biological sciences and retiring director of SMU-in-Taos

Faculty and staff recipients of Students' Association Awards are recognized for giving unselfishly to the students and the University as a whole. The recipients are:

• Outstanding Administrator – Dana Gibson, vice president for business and finance
• Outstanding Trustee – Fred Hegi, founding partner, Wingate Partners L.P.

The Willis M. Tate Award, also given by the Students' Association, was presented to Maria Dixon, assistant professor of corporate communications and public affairs. The award honors an outstanding faculty member who has been involved in student life.

Recipients of the Outstanding Faculty Teaching Awards presented by the Rotunda yearbook include:

• David Doyle, adjunct lecturer in history and director, University Honors Program
• Rick Halperin, adjunct lecturer in history and assistant director, Office of Leadership and Community Involvement
• Karen Kriete, assistant professor of dance
• David Willis, assistant professor of mechanical engineering and assistant professor of environmental and civil engineering

The Outstanding Faculty/Staff Volunteer Awards were presented to Allen Gwinn, director of technology for the Cox School of Business, and Thomas Tunks, associate provost for educational programs, who were recognized by the Office of Leadership and Community Involvement for "exemplary community service outside the University."
