DALLAS (SMU) -- Marciem Bazell has been appointed director of opera at SMU’s Meadows School of the Arts, effective August 1, 2002. She will be responsible for directing productions and coordinating the Meadows School opera theatre program, including teaching stage movement, character development and acting for singers.

Bazell served as director of opera at The University of Texas at El Paso for the past three years, where she directed and produced one full opera and one opera scenes program per year and taught courses in applied voice and music theater workshop. She also directed opera productions and served on the faculty at two renowned music schools in Philadelphia, The Curtis Institute of Music (1986-1999) and The Academy of Vocal Arts (1988-1999).

In addition, Bazell has worked as a freelance director for regional opera companies for the past 15 years. Her directorial credits include Tosca, Faust, La Traviata, La Boheme, Rigoletto, Romeo et Juliette and many other productions for companies throughout the U.S., including The Sarasota Opera, The Des Moines Metro Opera, The Chatauqua Opera, Opera Illinois, The El Paso Opera and others. She has also worked with young artists in the apprentice programs of the Sarasota, Chatauqua, Virginia and Des Moines operas.

During her career, Bazell has sung in America, Germany and Austria. She holds a Bachelor of Music in opera performance from Temple University.
