DALLAS (SMU) — Southern Methodist University plans to award 1,790 degrees at the 85th annual commencement ceremonies, Saturday, May 20.

U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, will give the commencement address at the university-wide ceremony at 9:30 a.m. in Moody Coliseum, 6024 Airline Road on the SMU campus. Preliminary degree totals include 963 bachelor’s degrees, 498 master’s degrees, 293 professional (law and theology) degrees and 36 doctoral degrees.

Honorary degrees will be awarded to civic activist Ernesto Cortés Jr., Doctor of Laws; chemist, educator and University of Texas President Larry Faulkner, Doctor of Science; Peruvian priest and Father of Liberation Theology Gustavo Gutiérrez, Doctor of Divinity; and philanthropist and civic leader Nancy Lee Blackburn Hamon, Doctor of Arts.

Diplomas will be presented in 19 separate school and departmental ceremonies across the campus beginning at noon and continuing throughout the day.

The largest number of degree candidates this year is in the Edwin L. Cox School of Business, which anticipates a total of 524 degrees. Other preliminary totals are the Dedman College of Humanities and Sciences, 440; the School of Law, 280; Meadows School of the Arts, 248; the School of Engineering and Applied Science, 212; and the Perkins School of Theology, 86.

Seating for the commencement ceremony is limited; therefore the university requests that only graduates and their families and friends attend.
