Dallas attorney and advocate for Texas school children Michael M. Boone will receive the J. Erik Jonsson Ethics Award from SMU’s Cary M. Maguire Center for Ethics and Public Responsibility in recognition of his work for Dallas and Texas.

Boone will be honored in a luncheon ceremony at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, at the Belo Mansion, 2101 Ross Ave. in Dallas. A 1967 graduate of SMU’s Dedman School of Law, Boone has more than 40 years of experience in mergers and acquisitions, corporate finance, and securities transactions. Leading by example against the backdrop of his professional successes, Boone has encouraged within his own firm programs that promote diversity in the workplace and participation in public service projects.
“Mike Boone’s leadership in civic affairs, public and private education, and community outreach has made a major impact on the Dallas area,” said SMU President R. Gerald Turner. “His service is dedicated to making our community a better place in which to live, raise a family and pursue a career. He is an outstanding role model of ethical, faith-based leadership finding expression in a deep sense of public responsibility. All of us at SMU congratulate him on this well-deserved honor.”
Maguire Center director and SMU law professor Tom Mayo noted that Boone has never shied away from taking strong positions on controversial issues, regardless of the personal consequences.
“His personal commitment to move the state to adopt an equitable and sustainable model for public school financing is an example of his enormous dedication to a subject that promises to benefit hundreds of thousands of school children for generations to come,” Mayo said.
Boone has served as president of the Dallas Citizens Council, as a leader at Preston Road Church of Christ and as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Highland Park Independent School District. He received SMU’s Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1996, is an SMU trustee and serves on the Executive Committee of the Dedman School of Law.
The Maguire Center annually presents the award named in honor of former Dallas mayor J. Erik Jonsson to individuals who "exemplify the spirit of moral leadership and public virtue." Past winners include Curtis W. Meadows Jr., Dr. Charles C. Sprague, Stanley Marcus, William T. Solomon, Jack Lowe Jr., Dr. Ron J. Anderson, Tom Luce, Caren Prothro, Roger Staubach and Rev. Zan Wesley Holmes Jr.
