Rick Halperin Appointed Director of SMU's New Human Rights Education Program

DALLAS (SMU) — Rick Halperin, a human rights educator and history instructor at SMU, has been appointed the director of the new Embrey Human Rights Education Pilot Program at SMU. Halperin is a longtime human rights activist who was recently elected to his third term as Chair of Amnesty International USA.

“We are fortunate to have Rick Halperin as the program’s director,” said James Hopkins, professor and chair of the Clements Department of History. “His courses in human rights have been among the most influential offered by the Clements Department of History for the past 20 years. This program is an educational initiative filled with potential.”

As the program director, Halperin will develop new student programs, bring human rights scholars to campus and convene symposia to prepare students to consider their ethical responsibilities as global citizens.

The pilot program, created by the history department, will collaborate with other departments in Dedman College to explore human rights topics.
