SMU Professor Uses Fellowship
to Enhance Teaching

Mel Coffee, assistant professor of journalism at Southern Methodist University, was named a 2006 Educator in the Newsroom Fellow by the Radio and Television News Directors Foundation.

Now in its seventh year, EIN Fellowships place broadcast journalism professors in radio or television newsrooms for a month-long work experience each summer.

Coffee, whose host station is KSBW-TV in Salinas, Calif., is spending the summer reporting and writing stories for news broadcasts to gain experience he can take back into the classroom. He teaches courses in broadcast news writing, reporting, anchoring and producing.
