SMU HOSTS STUDENT DEBATE COMPETITION

DALLAS (SMU) — College students from around North Texas will be participating in a debate competition at SMU on Saturday, Feb. 7, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Umphrey Lee Center, 3300 Dyer St.

The event is sponsored by the Cary M. Maguire Center for Ethics and Public Responsibility and the Jno. Owens Foundation, and will feature three debates on the following topics:

• “Are Multinational Corporations Free from Moral Obligations?”
• “Should We Encourage International Trade in Tobacco Products?”
• “Do Rich Nations Have an Obligation to Help Poor Nations?”

Judges have been recruited from the Dallas-area international community, local ethics community, SMU faculty and staff and the Dallas Council on World Affairs. The winners will receive a trophy in recognition of their achievement.
