SMU ANNOUNCES SPEAKERS FOR 2002-03 TATE LECTURE SERIES DALLAS (SMU) -- Vice President Dick Cheney, two-time Academy Award-winning actor Sidney Poitier, best-selling author John Irving, renowned paleontologist Paul Sereno and cable television hosts Bill OReilly and Chris Matthews will be among the speakers for the 21st season of SMUs Willis M. Tate Distinguished Lecture Series. This season the Tate Lecture Series is pleased to welcome the law firm of Jones, Day, Reavis & Pogue to this years list of sponsors. The firm will present The Jones Day Lecture on March 4, 2003. The 2002-03 season begins Tuesday, Sept. 17 with The Linda and Mitch Hart Lecture featuring a panel moderated by David Gergen, editor-at-large of U.S. News & World Report. Panelists will include Tom Friedman, Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist for The New York Times, and Bernard Shaw, Emmy Award-winning former principal anchor for CNN. Other lectures will be as follows:
In its 21st season, the Tate Lecture Series has become an integral part of the cultural and intellectual life of Dallas. We are delighted to announce the 2002-03 Tate Lecture Series schedule, said Linda W. Hart, chair of the Tate Lecture Series Board of Directors. Both the slate of speakers and the topics of discussion should generate a lot of excitement for our patrons and the Dallas community. The Tate Lecture Series is presented by The Dallas Morning News and sponsored by WFAA-TV (Channel 8), Talk Radio 570 KLIF and American Airlines. Supporters are Mansion on Turtle Creek, Blumengarten by Judy Blackman, Cencor Realty Services, SMU Norwick Center for Media, SMU Student Foundation, Sewell Lexus and The Weitzman Group. This season continues the Tate Series tradition of presenting a powerful slate of national and international speakers, said Jeanne P. Whitman, SMUs Vice President for Development and External Affairs. Their presence at SMU provides the university and the Dallas community as a whole the opportunity for the audience to hear unique perspectives on policy, business, science and culture.
