DALLAS
(SMU) -- Don Carty, the chairman, president and chief executive officer
of AMR Corporation, the parent company of American Airlines, will give
the address May 19 at Southern Methodist University's 86th annual commencement
ceremony.
"As a leader in the worldwide airline industry, Don Carty operates
on a global scale daily," said SMU President R. Gerald Turner. "He
brings an important perspective to our graduating class as they set their
own aspirations for careers, citizenship and service in the shrinking
world of the 21st century. We are honored to have Mr. Carty for our commencement
speaker."
Donald J. Carty became chairman, president, and chief executive officer
of AMR Corporation on May 20, 1998, after serving as president of AMR
Airline Group and American Airlines since March 15, 1995. Prior to becoming
chairman, Carty was the company's principal airline executive, responsible
for all operational elements of the American and American Eagle domestic
and international route systems.
Before joining American, Carty spent seven years in various management
positions with Celanese Canada, Ltd., Air Canada and the Canadian Pacific
Railway. Carty was American's senior vice president and controller before
leaving the airline in March 1985 to become president and CEO of CP Air
in Canada. In March of 1987, he returned to American and was elected senior
vice president-airline planning. Between 1989 and 1995, Carty was executive
vice president-finance and planning for AMR and American Airlines.
Carty is a graduate of Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, and of
the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration. He serves on the
boards of directors of Dell Computer Corporation, Brinker International
and Sears, Roebuck and Co. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of
Southern Methodist University, as well as the Harvard Business School
Visiting Committee, the Advisory Board of the Kellogg Graduate School
of Management at Northwestern University and the SMU Cox School of Business
Executive Board. He also is a member of the Dallas Citizens Council. Carty
and his wife, Ana, live in Dallas.
The universitywide commencement ceremony will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday,
May 19, in Moody Coliseum. SMU will award about 1,800 undergraduate, graduate
and professional degrees. Diplomas will be presented at individual school
or departmental ceremonies throughout the day.
