April 12, 2001 STATE APPEALS COURT TO HEAR CASES AT SMU'S DEDMAN SCHOOL OF LAW DALLAS (SMU) -- Three judges from the state's Eighth District Court of Appeals in El Paso will spend two days at Southern Methodist University's Dedman School of Law hearing oral arguments. The court will convene at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, April 17, and Thursday, April 19, in the law school's recently completed Hillcrest Courtroom, located on the ground floor of the Underwood Law Library, 6550 Hillcrest Avenue. Cameras will be allowed in the courtroom, but must be in place before 9 a.m. Media interested in observing the court may call the SMU Office of News and Information at 214-768-7650. The Eighth District Court of Appeals normally sits in El Paso, but agreed to travel to SMU to hear cases transferred to the court by the Fifth District Court of Appeals in Dallas. Appearing for the court will be Chief Justice Richard Barajas, Justice Ann Crawford McClure and Justice David Wellington Chew. "This will be a wonderful opportunity for our students to hear actual cases argued before a very important court," said John Attanasio, dean of SMU's Dedman School of Law and the William Hawley Atwell Chair in Constitutional Law. "This will be the first court to sit in the new Hillcrest Courtroom and we are very proud that one of the justices, Justice Chew, is a Dedman law school alumnus." While at SMU, the court will hear oral arguments in the following ten cases:
