As President Bush readies to leave the White House in 2009, other Texans may have a chance to follow in his footsteps.
Somewhat, anyway.
Political observers say it's unlikely that a Texan will be a presidential candidate next year, but one or another could make it as a candidate for vice president.
If not, it will be the first time a Texan hasn't run for president or vice president in 36 years.
"Only in Texas do people believe that if there's not a Texan on the ballot, that's a problem," Cal Jillson, a political science professor at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, said with a chuckle. "But there's a bit of Texas fatigue. There's an overarching question of whether the country is interested in much more Texas leadership."
