Area universities getting $10M from defense bill

Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, said Wednesday that Dallas-Fort Worth will be getting $10 million for its universities as part of the 2008 Defense Appropriations Bill, if approved by Congress.

"Our research universities in the Metroplex are providing the high-tech, innovative research required to develop the military systems and medical treatments of the future," Hutchison said in a statement issued Wednesday.

The bill was passed by the House in May. The bill was passed in the Senate Appropriations Committee Wednesday, and the full Senate is expected to consider the bill early next month.

Here are the universities that will share in the funds:

  • Southern Methodist University's School of Engineering will get $1 million to develop new digital camera technologies that can be used to improve the detection of concealed weapons and ballistics on the battlefield.
