Dallas' Knost (rhymes with most) won the 107th U.S. Amateur Championship on Sunday, holding off Michael Thompson, 2 and 1, in the 36-hole final at Olympic Club. He is only the second player to win the U.S. Amateur and the U.S. Public Links in the same year. Ryan Moore did it in 2004.
Knost, who finished his SMU career before winning the Publinx Championship in July, took the lead for good with a 15-foot birdie putt on No. 13. He then holed a tough chip shot on the 14th from the back of the fringe to put him 2-up.
Knost closed out the match with a chip to within three feet on the 35th hole. After Thompson conceded the par, Knost thrust his arms in the air and then hugged Thompson
