WASHINGTON — In a unique moment in the history of American presidential elections, the top candidates on Tuesday will debate the controversial Iraq war with its principal strategist.
The contenders will veer off the campaign trail to attend Senate committee proceedings where Army Gen. David Petraeus is presenting what promises to be the most comprehensive and politically charged overview of the war before this summer's political conventions. . .
"It will be high theater," said Cal Jillson, a political science professor at Southern Methodist University. "The country's attention will be focused."
