events. And, for the first time, the speech he made at SMU some 42 years ago is available online.

Dr. King spoke at SMU's convocation in McFarlin Auditorium on March 17, 1966. You can hear the speech or download it to your iPod. The recording was made with a hand-held recorder brought to McFarlin that day by Gene Halaburt of Dallas, who graciously provided a copy to SMU. (There is a brief gap in the recording at about 40 minutes, possibly caused when the cassette was turned over.)

Monday, Jan. 21

SMU's MLK Day of Service - This program will educate participants about Dr. King’s philosophy by highlighting the good work and social impact of non-profits in the Dallas area. See www.smu.edu/mlkday for more information or to sign up.

Tuesday, Jan. 22

MLK Birthday Party at noon in The Commons of Hughes-Trigg Student Center.

Wednesday, Jan. 23

Unity Walk, beginning at noon at Perkins Chapel and ending in The Commons of Hughes-Trigg Student Center.

Thursday, Jan. 24

Screening at 7 p.m. in Hughes-Trigg Theatre of Dare Not Walk Alone: The War of Responsibility. The film is the story of the "war of ideas" in St. Augustine, Fla., in 1964 that led to the passage of the first civil right bill on July 2 of that year.

Friday, Jan. 25

Unity Mixer, featuring food, fun and fellowship, at 6 p.m. in the Hughes-Trigg Varsity.

Saturday, Jan. 26

MLK Kids Day - Features a display of talent by youth from the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Sponsored by SMU's Association of Black Students.
