- First Lady Laura Bush, SMU class of 1968,
member of SMU Board of Trustees. She received SMU’s Distinguished Alumni
Award in 1999.
- Vice President Dick Cheney, former member
of SMU Board of Trustees
- Karen Hughes, SMU class of 1977, former
U.S. Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs,
former adviser to President George W. Bush. She received SMU’s
Distinguished Alumni Award in 2003.
- Harriet Miers, SMU class of 1967 and 1970
(law), former White House Counsel. She received SMU's Distinguished
Alumni Award in 2002 and the Robert G. Storey Award for Distinguished
Achievement from SMU's Dedman School of Law in 2006.
- Jeanne L. Phillips, SMU class of 1976,
member of SMU Board of Trustees, chair of Presidential Inaugural
Committee for 2005, former U.S. Representative to the Organization for
Economic Cooperation and Development based in Paris. She received SMU’s
Distinguished Alumni Award in 2005.
- Mindy Tucker Fletcher, SMU class of 1992,
national press secretary for the 2000 Bush-Cheney campaign, former
communications director of Republican National Committee. She received
SMU’s Emerging Leader Award in 2004.
- Ruth Altshuler, SMU class of 1948, member
of SMU Board of Trustees; appointed to Library of Congress Trust Fund
Board; National Commission for United Nations Educational, Scientific
and Cultural Organization; and National Leadership Council for the Laura
Bush Foundation for America’s Libraries.
- Caren Prothro, member of SMU Board of
Trustees, appointed to the President's Committee on the Arts and
Humanities.
- Gail Daly, associate dean for library and
technology at SMU’s Dedman School of Law, appointed to the National
Museum and Library Services Board.
- The Rev. Kirbyjon Caldwell, SMU class of
1981, member of SMU Board of Trustees; delivered the benediction at Bush
inaugurations in 2001 and 2005.
- The Rev. Mark Craig, member of the SMU
Board of Trustees; delivered the sermon at the National Prayer Service
in Washington’s National Cathedral, culminating activities of the 2005
Bush inauguration.
- SMU Medal of Freedom recipients have
included former President George H.W. Bush and former Secretary
of State Colin Powell.
- SMU Commencement speakers have included
President George W. Bush (then Texas Governor) in 1999 and President
George H.W. Bush in 1992.
- SMU Lecture Series Speakers have
