The following Levels accompany the melodic dictation exercises on CD as compiled by Professors Mancini and Wick at Southern Methodist University. IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are listening to soundfiles on a laptop computer or system with small, non-music quality speakers, you may have great difficulty hearing low/bass parts due to the limited speaker range of those systems!!! Use high quality headphones to hear all parts equally!


LEVELS FOR MELODY

LEVEL 1 - Stepwise motion in major keys. 7 to 15 notes in 4/4, 3/4, or 6/8 time, with divisions of the beat. (30 examples click here for the audio files)

LEVEL 2 - Skips in the tonic triad in major keys. 7 to 15 notes, add 2/2, 3/2, 2/4, 3/8, and 9/8 meters. (30 examples click here for the audio files)

LEVEL 3 - Minor keys. Other parameters same as levels 1 and 2 above. (30 examples click here for the audio files)

LEVEL 4 - Skips in the dominant triad. Up to 20 notes, add subdivisions of the beat. (25 examples click here for the audio files)

LEVEL 5 - Skips in the other diatonic triads and in the dominant seventh chord. Up to 20 notes, add syncopations. (30 examples click here for the audio files)

LEVEL 6 - Free diatonic movement: skips in other seventh chords, leaps of a tenth, diminished intervals, implied appoggiaturas and escape tones. Up to 27 notes. (20 examples click here for the audio files)
