Advising & Enrollment: As you proceed in your academic career at Meadows, you’ll need advice on which courses to take. Once you’ve declared your major, the faculty and administrative staff of the individual divisions become important resources for this. Students are advised by faculty from their major area who help them develop a degree plan that will fulfill requirements and explore a student’s special interests. Students rely on their division office for Degree Progress Reports and other enrollment information. So, make sure to get acquainted with that staff, find out who your faculty adviser is, and pick up any handbooks or other materials that may have been prepared for you.
To make sure your advising and enrollment go smoothly, you should follow these simple steps:
- Keep your mailing address, home address and student financial account current on Access.SMU. If your addresses and student financial account are not up-to-date, a hold will be placed on your account. That means you’ll be prohibited from enrolling until that hold has been resolved.
- Watch your SMU e-mail account for important enrollment announcements, like deadlines and enrollment dates.
- You should schedule an appointment with your faculty adviser well in advance of the enrollment appointment that you are given through Access.SMU. (If you don’t know who your adviser is, make sure and check with your Division office.)
- Use Access.SMU to print your Degree Progress Report (DPR) so you can see what courses you still need to take.
- Using your DPR and Access.SMU Class Search, find the courses that you need to take and write them on your enrollment form.
- Go to your faculty advising appointment and review your class selections with your adviser. (Make sure and take your DPR to your meeting. It serves as an important tool for you and your adviser as you plan your course schedule.)
- Once your adviser has approved your enrollment form, you’ll need to obtain any department or instructor permissions you may need for restricted courses.
- Then, all you have to do is go online to Access.SMU on or after your assigned enrollment time to enroll. Then, sit back until you start the whole process again a semester later!
