Meadows Receives Largest Gift in SMU History
Foundation’s gift will support faculty and student excellence, as well as Meadows Museum (March 1, 2006)
The Meadows School of the Arts announced March 1 a gift of $33 million from The Meadows Foundation, the largest single gift ever made by the Foundation and the largest single financial gift in the history of Southern Methodist University. Algur H. Meadows, through the foundation that bears his name, first gave to SMU in 1962, pledging funds designated for the construction and endowment of a museum to house Spanish works of art. Meadows Wind Ensemble Presents "Diversions & Dances" (November 2, 2005)
The Meadows Wind Ensemble at SMU’s Meadows School of the Arts, under the direction of Jack Delaney, celebrates its 30th anniversary with the concert “Diversions & Dances” at 8 p.m., Friday, Nov. 11 in Caruth Auditorium of the Owen Arts Center, 6101 Bishop Blvd. on the SMU campus. SMU Theatre Presents Three Sisters by Chekhov and Slaughter City by Naomi Wallace (October 31, 2005)
The Division of Theatre at SMU’s Meadows School of the Arts will present Anton Chekhov’s bittersweet comedy-drama Three Sisters and Naomi Wallace’s riveting Slaughter City. Three Sisters will run Nov. 10-13 and 17-20 in the Greer Garson Theatre; show times are 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. Slaughter City will be presented in the Margo Jones Theatre Nov. 16-20; show times are 8 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Read more.
SMU Visiting Artist Lecture Series Presents Sculptor Heide Fasnacht (October 26, 2005)
New York-based artist Heide Fasnacht, known for her sculptures and drawings of energetic, ephemeral subjects such as explosions, will give a talk at SMU as part of the 2005-06 Visiting Artist Lecture Series at the Meadows School of the Arts. Fasnacht’s work is based on images from scientific observation and presents natural phenomena in the form of static images – volcanoes, geysers, bomb blasts, sneezes and star clusters. Read more.
Masterworks by Agnes de Mille, George Balanchine and Martha Graham Highlight the Fall Dance Concert (October 18, 2005)
The first U.S. performance in 30 years of Agnes de Mille’s important ballet The Four Marys will highlight the Fall Dance Concert at SMU’s Meadows School of the Arts, November 3-6 and 10-13 in the Bob Hope Theatre. Also featured will be major works by George Balanchine, Martha Graham and Leni Wylliams, as well as a rollicking jazz work by Artist-in-Residence Danny Buraczeski. Read more.
Student and Parents Get a Head Start on Planning for College (October 13, 2005)
The Dallas Performing and Visual Arts College Fair will be held Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2005, from 7-9 p.m. in the lobby of the Owen Arts Center at the Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University, 6101 Bishop Blvd. Admission counselors from around the country will be on hand at this free event to provide high school students the tools they need to plan their future in the arts. Music in the Meadows Presents Halloween Showing of Vampire Silent Film Classic (October 11, 2005)
Celebrate Halloween the old fashioned way: with the granddaddy of silent horror films, the 1922 vampire classic Nosferatu, accompanied by a live film score improvised by BL Lacerta. Introducing the show will be horror film expert Kevin Heffernan, associate professor in the Division of Cinema-Television at SMU’s Meadows School of the Arts and author of a recent book on horror movies, Ghouls, Gimmicks and Gold. Meadows Chorale to Present Bach’s “Mass in B Minor” (October 5, 2005)
J.S. Bach’s beautiful but rarely performed Mass in B Minor, BWV 232, termed by many the greatest work ever written for voices and orchestra, will be presented by the Meadows Chorale and members of the Meadows Symphony Orchestra at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21 and 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23 in Caruth Auditorium. Division of Journalism Presents the 2005 Rosine Smith Sammons Lecture in Media Ethics Featuring Kurt Eichenwald (September 23, 2005)
Kurt Eichenwald is a writer and investigative reporter for The New York Times. He has been employed by the Times since 1988, and primarily covers Wall Street and corporate topics such as insider trading, accounting scandals and takeovers. Eichenwald has earned a number of awards and nominations for his writing. Read more.
Division of Theatre Presents Ibsen’s “Peer Gynt” (September 30, 2005)
The Division of Theatre at SMU’s Meadows School of the Arts will present Henrik Ibsen’s philosophical, romantic play Peer Gynt, directed by Associate Professor Sara Romersberger. Based on Norwegian folklore, Peer Gynt follows the adventures of its title character, a self-centered, opportunistic rogue who travels the world in search of fame, fortune, and ultimately himself. Ibsen combines comedy, tragedy and satire of popular 19th century trends in the play, which he adapted for the stage in 1876 from his acclaimed fantasy poem written some years earlier. The Meadows School production employs movement, music and dance to make this 19th-century tale ring true as the ageless story of man's search for self. Read more.
Meadows School of the Arts Dean Carole Brandt to Retire (August 15, 2005)
Dr. Carole Brandt, dean of the Algur H. Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University, has announced her plans to retire from SMU effective May 31, 2006. In addition to serving as dean since 1994, Dr. Brandt holds the Algur H. Meadows Chair and is a professor of theatre at the Meadows School. She is the first woman in the University's history to be appointed dean at one of the University's seven degree-granting schools. Read more.
Stan Wojewodski, Jr. Appointed Distinguished Artist-in-Residence in the Division of Theatre (July 8, 2005)
Stan Wojewodski, Jr., the former dean of the Yale School of Drama, has been appointed Distinguished Artist-in-Residence in the Division of Theatre at Southern Methodist University. He will teach directing and also direct the 18th-century comedy of manners She Stoops to Conquer, the last production in SMU's Main Stage season, slated for April 20-23 and 27-30, 2006. Read more.
New Faculty Member Brings New Life to Music Therapy Program
DALLAS (SMU) – Dr. Robert Krout is the newly-appointed head of the department of music therapy at the Meadows School. He received a Bachelor of Music degree in music education from Ithaca College, and three degrees—Master of Arts in music therapy, Master of Education in special education, and Doctor of Education in music education and therapy—from Columbia University-Teacher’s College. Art History Professor Digs for Teaching Material
DALLAS (SMU) – Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Greg Warden’s office is in the Dean’s Suite on the third floor of the Greer Garson Theatre, and he spends much of his time working with faculty on issues like promotion and tenure and curriculum. He remains an active teacher and researcher, however, using the light box in his office to prepare slide presentations for his Intro to Architecture class and staying in touch with colleagues across the world and nation to continue the important work he heads at the Poggio Colla excavation in central Italy. DALLAS (SMU) – SMU’s Meadows School of the Arts will present its 12th annual fundraising concert, “The Grand Event: Meadows at the Meyerson,” on April 21, 2005, at 7:30 p.m. in the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center, 2301 Flora St. in Dallas. Held each spring, the concert features the Meadows Symphony Orchestra and honors a community leader. Stanley Marcus and Roger Winter Honored in Meadows Museum Exhibitions (April 7, 2005)
DALLAS (SMU) – Beginning April 20, 2005, the Meadows Museum presents two exclusive exhibitions - The Art of the Book: A Centennial Tribute to Stanley Marcus, Bibliophile and From Drawing to Painting: Roger Winter’s Subway Series and Beyond. The first exhibition celebrates what would have been the 100th birthday of Stanley Marcus, the most important taste-maker and cultural figure in twentieth-century Dallas, and introduces the richness of the Marcus holdings of rare books generously donated to the DeGolyer Library by Linda Marcus in 2003. DALLAS (SMU) – The Meadows Jazz Orchestra at SMU’s Meadows School of the Arts performs a variety of popular jazz tunes in a free concert at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26 in Caruth Auditorium of the Owen Arts Center, 6101 Bishop Blvd. on the SMU campus. DALLAS (SMU) – The Meadows Opera Theatre at SMU’s Meadows School of the Arts concludes its 2004-2005 season with “Mostly Mozart,” a concert of opera scenes, at 8 p.m. on April 27 and 28 in the Greer Garson Theatre of the Owen Arts Center, 6101 Bishop Blvd. on the SMU campus. Dr. Mark A. Roglan Named Interim Director of the Meadows Museum (March 14, 2005)
DALLAS (SMU) - Dr. Mark A. Roglán has been appointed interim director of the Meadows Museum at Southern Methodist University, effective May 1, 2005. Dr. Roglán succeeds Dr. Edmund Pillsbury, who has served as Meadows Museum director since July 2003 and has announced plans to undertake new challenges in the public sector beginning in May. Meadows Museum Announces 2004 Moss/Chumley Artist Award Winner - Ludwig Schwarz (March 9, 2005)
DALLAS (SMU) - The Meadows Museum at SMU has announced that Ludwig Schwarz is the winner of the 2004 Moss/Chumley Artist Award. The award, which carries a cash prize of $1,500, is given annually to an outstanding North Texas artist who has exhibited professionally for at least 10 years and who has a proven track record as an active community advocate for the visual arts. Schwarz will receive the award on March 30 at an evening reception at the Meadows Museum. Read more.

DALLAS (SMU) – The Division of Theatre at SMU’s Meadows School of the Arts is presenting the world premiere of “Leaving Eden: The Chekhov Project,” a specially commissioned work by New York-based playwright Chiori Miyagawa. The play, to be directed by Associate Professor and Head of Directing Greg Leaming, is adapted from the biography and short stories of Anton Chekhov, one of the most influential playwrights of modern times.
