Programs: The Division of Music offers Bachelor of Music degrees in performance,
composition, music education, and music therapy, a Bachelor of Arts degree in
music and a Minor in music.
Bachelor of Music in Performance degrees are offered in orchestral instruments, piano, voice, organ, harpsichord and guitar. Selective admission and limited enrollment enable students to perform in ensembles from their first year at SMU.
- The orchestral instrument program offers instruction with both full-time and adjunct faculty — many of whom are principals in the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. The full-time faculty includes internationally renowned violinist Eduard Schmieder.
- The piano program, with four full-time faculty members and artist-in-residence Joaquín Achúcarro, emphasizes solo performance, chamber music, accompanying, pedagogy, master classes and repertoire classes.
- The voice program is oriented to the professional performer and music educator. Coursework is supported by four full-time voice teachers, an opera director, choral director and vocal coach/accompanists. The degree plan includes pedagogy, literature, choral ensembles, opera and acting.
- The organ and harpsichord programs, taught by Larry Palmer, are widely recognized and offer access to instruments of exceptional quality both on campus and in the Dallas area.
- The classical guitar program is headed by Robert Guthrie, one of the nation's leading teachers and recitalists.
