Graduate Degree ProgramsGraduate Programs: Graduate degree programs in music are designed to provide increased specialization in the major field beyond the undergraduate level, and at the same time to assure that students continue to develop the breadth of competencies required to function as well-rounded professionals. While specific degree requirements vary according to the major field pursued, all Master of Music degree programs include the following components: performance, research, pedagogy, music history and music theory. The Artist Certificate is intended for exceptional performers with a bachelor's degree or equivalent credentials who are in the final stages of preparation for a professional career.

The Master of Music in Composition program is flexible and designed to encourage independent stylistic development, technical skill and artistic excellence. The Master of Music in Conducting includes both instrumental and choral conducting programs, and provides carefully selected students an opportunity to work with major ensembles in both rehearsal and concert formats. For degree requirements for the Master of Music in Conducting, click here.

The Master of Music in Music Education may be earned in the traditional four semesters, in an accelerated program of two semesters or in a part-time program designed for the practicing music educator. For degree requirements for the Master of Music in Music Education, click here.

The Master of Music in Music History program offers research and teaching experiences in preparation for Ph.D. work in musicology. These experiences include historical seminars, information retrieval procedures (including the most up-to-date Internet resources), historical notational studies, foreign language skills and critical writing. The Master of Music in Piano Performance and Pedagogy program is among the most distinguished piano teacher training programs in the nation. A select group of students work closely with faculty members in a teaching internship that is broad-based and intensive. Designed for professional leadership in the church or the community, the Master of Sacred Music stresses conducting ensembles, theology, literature and performance practices and skills. The program is sponsored jointly by the Meadows School of the Arts and the Perkins School of Theology, one of the nation's leading theological seminaries. The Artist Certificate is intended for the exceptional performer who already holds a bachelor's degree or equivalent conservatory/professional credentials, and who is in the final stages of preparation to enter major competitions, audition for major orchestras or begin a professional career. Acceptance into the program requires a personal audition with the faculty at or above the recital level expected for completion of the Bachelor of Music degree in performance. The certificate normally encompasses a four-semester residency.
