FacultyFaculty: The Division of Journalism faculty is a blend of professional and academic talent especially suited to individualized teaching. Faculty expertise includes broadcast, print and Internet, and all are committed to teaching a firm grounding in ethics and law as well as the professionalism needed for the modern media workplace. Journalism faculty members have been awarded a variety of major print and broadcast awards, including the Pulitzer Prize.

Tony Pederson
Belo Distinguished Chair in Journalism
Tony Pederson has held the Belo Chair since June 2003. Before that he was senior vice president and executive editor of The Houston Chronicle. Pederson's interests are First Amendment law and press freedom issues, especially in Latin America. He is a director of the Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas and Partners of the Americas and serves on the executive committee of the Inter American Press Association. Read more.

Carolyn Barta
Senior Lecturer
Carolyn Barta teaches newswriting, editorial writing, and media and politics. In her extensive career with The Dallas Morning News, she covered politics, served as a national reporter and as op-ed editor and a member of the editorial board. As a commentator, she has appeared on CNN, C-SPAN, ABC-TV's Good Morning America, Texas Cable News and public television's KERA-TV. Read more.

Melvin Coffee
Assistant Professor
Mel Coffee teaches courses in broadcast news writing, reporting, anchoring and producing. Before joining SMU Coffee taught four and a half years at Syracuse University where he received a University-wide award for teaching excellence and was selected teacher of the year by the communications school graduating class of 2002. Craig Flournoy
Assistant Professor
Dr. Craig Flournoy teaches advanced news writing, computer-assisted reporting, history of American journalism and investigative reporting. His research interests include media coverage of minorities and social movements. Dr. Flournoy was an investigative reporter for The Dallas Morning News for 22 years, winning the paper's first Pulitzer Prize in 1986. Read more.

Michele Houston
Senior Lecturer and Digital Newsroom Manager
Michele Houston teaches basic video/audio production, sports production and production labs for broadcast reporting classes. She focuses on teaching students how best to use tools of the trade to tell compelling stories. Before coming to SMU she was executive producer and studio manager for Yahoo! Broadcast. Read more.

Camille Kraeplin
Assistant Professor
Dr. Camille Kraeplin teaches both applied journalism courses, such as feature writing, and theoretical and conceptual courses that examine the role of the media in society. Her research interests include convergence journalism and the portrayal of women and minorities in the mass media. Dr. Kraeplin's professional journalism experience includes work at The Dallas Morning News, Texas Monthly, Dallas-Fort Worth Home & Garden and The Austin American-Statesman. Read more

Lucy Scott
Broadcast Journalism Executive-In-Residence
Scott spent 17 years writing and producing in New York, where she earned a national Emmy Award and a Gracie Award for her work. Read more.

Lori Stahl
Senior Lecturer
Lori Stahl teaches advanced news writing and reporting as well as news editing. Before joining the faculty in 2004, Stahl was executive editor of A.M. Journal Express. She was a reporter at The Dallas Morning News for 14 years. As a reporter, Stahl received awards from the Press Club of Dallas for her coverage of breaking news as well as in-depth reporting. Jayne Suhler
Senior Lecturer
Jayne Suhler teaches a range of reporting and news analysis courses, including newswriting and reporting, literary journalism, television commentary and an Internet-based writing course. Suhler spent more than a decade as a journalist, including six years as staff writer for The Dallas Morning News. She was ghostwriter for Moments, by Dallas newsman Chip Moody, an account of Moody's battle with cancer (Taylor Publishing, 1994). Read more.
