Music Educators Workshops:
The
Southern Methodist University Music Educators Workshops is an annual professional
development opportunity offered for music educators by the Community Education
Department of SMU's Meadows School of the Arts The Music Division of
Meadows is an accredited institutional member of both the National Association
of Schools of Music and the Texas Association of Music Schools. In addition,
it is the largest performing arts division in the Meadows School.
Students who earn graduate credit for participation in the Music Educators Workshops may be able to apply that credit to either SMU's Master of Music (MM) degree or SMU's Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree. Both degree programs are designed for professionally employed educators in public or private schools.
With the guidance of a faculty advisor, Master of Music candidates may use elective choices to build a concentration in one of four areas: Choral Conducting, Instrumental Conducting, General Music, or Piano Pedagogy. A concentration requires that a minimum of six elective credits be earned in that specific area. Subject to departmental approval, up to six credit hours of the Master of Music may be satisfied through involvement in the Music Educators Workshops.
The
36-hour Master of Education is designed for the educator whose interest lies
in broadening academic preparation for a specific field (e.g., music education)
and in refining pedagogical skills and knowledge of education in its psychological,
social, and cultural context. Subject to departmental approval, up to 24 credit
hours of the Master of Education may be satisfied through involvement in the
Music Educators Workshops. The M.Ed. can be individualized for teachers at
all levels, kindergarten through grade 12.
