The recent controversy surrounding the racist and sexist comments radio personality Don Imus made about the Rutgers University women’s basketball team brought to the forefront of people’s minds the need to continue discussing race and gender issue, and how specific words can convey images and meanings that go beyond the literal definition of the words. CCPA professors Maria Dixon, Owen Lynch and Dan Schill joined Journalism professors Mel Coffee and Rick Stevens to host a Town Hall Meeting April 30 to discuss Imus’s comments, the impacts felt by various communities and when certain language is allowable in various forms of media.
