Today
more than ever, there is both a need and a demand for skilled and resourceful
administrators and managers in leadership roles in the field of the arts. As
arts organizations face increased financial pressures, it is important for them
to have savvy business professionals with a comprehensive understanding of the
arts at the helm. Training those professionals is the mission of our program.
The Arts Administration graduate program at Southern Methodist University consistently ranks as one of the top arts management training programs in the country and it is the only one in the nation to require the completion of joint degrees concurrently, the Master of Arts, Arts Administration and the Master of Business Administration. This intensive 21-month program is housed in the Meadows School of the Arts, long regarded as one of the most distinguished and competitive arts schools in the nation and now includes a semester at Bocconi University in Milan, Italy. The M.B.A. is granted by SMU's Edwin L. Cox School of Business, ranked consistently as one of the finest graduate business programs in the United States.
This innovative combination of coursework, as well as internships, an international component and intensive exposure to arts organizations and their challenges, creates a group of graduates who hold leadership positions in arts, entertainment, education and non-profit organizations around the world.
Dallas has been selected as the site for the International Association of Arts and Cultural Management (AIMAC) biennial research conference June 28-July 1, 2009. Arts Administration Chair Zannie G. Voss says Meadows and Cox will work together to host the conference which provides a forum for the exchange of insights and perspectives in the field of cultural management. Previous conferences have been held in Valencia, Spain, Montreal, Canada, Milano, Italy and Brisbane, Australia.
