Course and Curriculum Approval Procedure
Course Approval
Approval of courses offered by divisions or centers in the Meadows School rests with the division or center offering the course. Each division or center shall determine its course approval policies and procedures and keep a copy of the policy and procedures document on file in the division or center office. Faculty approval is a required component of course approval procedure. All proposals for new courses, course renumbering, and substantive course changes shall be forwarded by the chair or director to the Meadows Academic Policies Committee following division or center approval, for purposes of school coordination and obtaining potential suggestions.
Course proposals should address:
- why the course is needed
- for whom the course is intended
- who will teach the course
- how often the course will be offered
- resources in place or needed
- expected enrollment, and restrictions, if any
- the course content
- materials, including texts, to be used
- what is expected of students (exams, papers, projects, etc.)
- basis for grading
- a sample syllabus and course calendar
Meadows Records Officers, in coordination with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, shall be responsible for ensuring that new, renumbered or revised courses are included in the University master course inventory, Bulletin and schedule of classes.
Curriculum Approval
Approval of curricula leading to degrees or minors in the Meadows School is by action of the Meadows Academic Policies Committee. New or substantially revised curricula that have been approved by the appropriate division or center faculty according to division or center policy (on file in the division or center office) shall be forwarded by the chair or director to the Meadows Academic Policies Committee for approval. Whether curricular revision is extensive enough to require Academic Policies Committee approval shall be determined by the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in consultation with the division chair or center director. Following Academic Policies Committee approval of curricula, the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs shall seek any necessary curriculum approval beyond the Meadows School. Meadows Records Officers, in coordination with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, shall be responsible for ensuring that new or revised curricula are included in the University Bulletin.
