At Meadows, you'll start creating on day one. You’ll do more than prepare for the future at Meadows—you’ll shape it in your first year. We challenge each student to develop his or her gifts to the highest level. We challenge students to find their unique voices and to develop the highest level of craftsmanship. While message and craft are the foundations of art, at Meadows we also practice entrepreneurship, outreach and engagement because they make an artist employable and relevant.

Carter Alexander will choreograph a new ballet to Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 8. Guest artist Crystal Frazier, on faculty at Point Park University, will create a new hip-hop piece. The program closes with Paul Taylor’s seminal work Esplanade, with music by Johann Sebastian Bach, restaged by Paul Taylor Dance Company/Meadows Dance alum Parisa Khobdeh.

The Legacy of Vesuvius: Bourbon Discoveries on the Bay of Naples

During the reigns of the Bourbon kings Charles III of Spain (who ruled as Charles VII of Naples from 1734 until 1759) and his son Ferdinand IV (1759 until 1799), the Mediterranean city of Naples established itself as a major European capital and key destination on the Grand Tour, even as Mount Vesuvius continued to smolder, threatening its environs. Throughout the latter half of the eighteenth century, these two monarchs funded archaeological excavations on the Bay of Naples that unearthed ancient treasures and fed into the craze for classical art that infused the Bourbon court.

Unearthing the Legacy of Islamic Spain

Spain’s Islamic heritage became a focal point in the 19th and early 20th centuries as the country grappled with political upheaval and issues of national identity. In their efforts to define “Spanishness,” many looked to medieval al-Andalus — the regions of Iberia ruled by Muslims between 711 and 1492. The Islamic monuments of Córdoba, Granada, and Seville, which were being excavated and restored, became powerful cultural symbols and popular images that often blended historical accuracy with exoticized fantasy. The paintings, prints, photographs and drawings gathered in this exhibition demonstrate how Spanish cultural memory and national identity were constructed and negotiated during this transformative period.

Somniloquy – Yuko Nishikawa

Yuko Nishikawa creates a fantastical environment with her colorful, tactile lively forms. With a hands-on exploratory approach. She makes paintings, lighting, mobiles and sculptures using a variety of mediums, reflecting her experiences in architecture restoration, interior and furniture design, crafts and engineering.

Growing up in the seaside town of Chigasaki just south of Tokyo, she now resides in New York City. She works in her Brooklyn studio which she named Forest: a place where things grow and things decay to nourish new lives, and where people can wonder and discover something new.
