About Colophon/Friends of the SMU Libraries
| The Friends of the SMU Libraries, originally founded in 1970 as Colophon, is an organization dedicated to promoting and enriching the resources, services and operations of the eleven SMU libraries. The Friends also provide opportunities for book lovers to become acquainted with each other and with the many resources of the SMU Libraries through a series of programs each year. These events feature noted authors, historians, artists, publishers and curators of notable collections. |

Since its founding in 1970, the Friends of the SMU Libraries/Colophon has been committed to helping the libraries maintain their excellence. In
40 years, the Friends have funded over $750,000 in materials and library services. In addition to providing funds for reference materials and fine press books, the Friends continue to provide much-needed support for electronic resources and equipment. Other grants have funded musical scores, compact discs and DVDs for fine arts and media services, equipment for preservation needs, staffing support and professional development activities for librarians. In 1972, the Friends established the Colophon Moderns Collection and have made annual grant contributions ever since. The Colophon Moderns includes approximately
1,500 items: books, broadsides, manuscripts, and letters representing those writers whose works are believed to be definitive in establishing the "contours of the spirit-soul-mind of man for the period of 1950 to 1975." To learn more about the Colophon Moderns Collection, click here.
