Jim Donovan
The Battles of Little
Bighorn and The Alamo
Jim Donovan is the founder and president of Jim
Donovan Literacy, a literary agency in Dallas,
Texas. Since starting the agency in 1993, he has
sold hundreds of books for dozens of writers,
negotiating publishing contracts with a number
of publishers. He handles both fiction (chiefly
mysteries and thrillers) and a broad range of
non-fiction (primarily American history,
biography, sports, health, popular culture, and
business). His agency also sells film, foreign,
and all subsidiary rights.
Jim has worn many hats in the publishing
business. He began his career in publishing in
an Austin bookstore in 1981, and moved to Dallas
in 1984 to become a buyer for a regional
bookstore chain. In 1987 he became a trade book
editor at Taylor Publishing; he was senior
editor there when he left in 1993. He has also
authored several books including, CUSTER AND THE
LITTLE BIGHORN (Voyageur Press, 2001) and the
recent A TERRIBLE GLORY (Little, Brown, 2008),
which spent three weeks on the New York Times
bestseller list and was hailed by the Los
Angeles Times, as "the last word on the Last
Stand." He is currently researching a book on
the battle of the Alamo.
Jim has guest-lectured and taught seminars on
the craft of writing and the business of
publishing (and getting published) at several
universities and writers' conferences.
He lives in Duncanville, Texas, with his wife
and daughter. He is a graduate of the University
of Texas.
