Dispute Resolution Masters and Certification Program
Be a Professional Peacemaker
Dispute resolution offers one of the most challenging and rewarding professional opportunities today. Conflicting parties in business, education, legal and religious communities, as well as families are using dispute resolution increasingly to settle differences, making it one of the fastest growing professions in the new millennium.
Business and government are recognizing the benefits of hiring individuals with formal training and practical expertise in conflict resolution and negotiation. Thus, the job market is growing rapidly.
SMU-in-Legacy is the premier Dispute Resolution program in the southwest offering both a graduate certificate and a master’s degree that include comprehensive, interdisciplinary study and classroom instruction. Students learn formal conflict management skills in negotiation, mediation, domestic relations, system design and apply practical techniques under the guidance of master instructors. With new terms starting every ten weeks, applicants can quickly achieve their goals.
The Graduate Certificate requires seven classes - 4 required and 3 elective. The required core classes give the student a base from which to expand and specialize in an elective area of interest. The Master of Arts degree broadens the curriculum to 14 classes - 5 required classes and 9 elective. Students may stop after completing the certificate or continue toward the master’s degree.
Current students are adults who want to be professional peacemakers either by changing careers, or applying their newly acquired skills to their current careers. Forward thinking students also see a second career in Dispute Resolution as an alternative to retirement.
