SMU will be celebrating
International Education Week (IEW) from November 13-16, 2006. IEW is
sponsored by The International Center
and Global
Connections. The purpose of International Education
Week is to promote cultural exchange and to celebrate
international education. You can find out more information about IEW on the web

Monday, November 13th - Area
High School Panel Discussion
- Come and learn how high school administrators are globalizing their campuses
at DISD,
Ursuline Academy, and
Greenhill School. Insight will also be given from
current students.

Tuesday, November 14th -
Student Panel on Culture Shock & Customs
- See how 3 international students and 3 study abroad students experienced
culture shock and what they did to overcome it. This session will be led by John
Wheeler, Director of the SMU English as a Second Language (ESL) Program.

Wednesday, November 15th -
Boren Study Abroad Scholarships
- For Undergraduate and Graduate students, sponsored by the National Security
Education Program.
A program officer from NSEP will give information on these scholarships to study
languages and cultures abroad in countries of national security interest,
including the Middle East, China, Africa, Latin America, and Central & Eastern
Europe.

Wednesday, November 15th -
Guest Speaker Dr. Ian Fairnie from Curtin University in Perth, Australia
- Dr. Fairnie will focus his discussion on a unique component of the SMU in
Australia program where students take a 3 week tour of Asia. In addition, he will
share his insight on the importance of community service and studying in
Australia.

- World's Fair
- Students from countries abroad or those that have an interest/connection to a
specific country will be creating displays that may include cultural
information, pictures, food, and traditional outfits.

· Thursday, November 16th
- Piano Recital by Lucille Chung
- Presented by the Embassy of Spain in collaboration with The Consulate General
of Spain and The Honorary Consulate of Spain. Music by Robert Schumann, Claude
Debussy, Israel D. Martinez, and Franz Liszt.
