New 2011 Hunt Scholars
Lance Barnard graduated from The Montclair Kimberley Academy in Montclair, New Jersey, where he was: Class Treasurer for nine years, Founder and President of the Stock Market Club, Student Liaison for Admissions, a Peer Leader, Senior Leader of the Student Technology Board, Model UN President, a three season long distance runner and captain of the cross-country and track teams. He was also the recipient of the school’s History and Community Service awards. Outside of school, Lance is a spokesman for teen financial literacy. He is also an Apple certified technician and is an active member of the Boy Scouts achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. At SMU, Lance plans on double majoring in Business and Psychology and minoring in Chinese.
Kelly Ann Buddecke graduated in the second graduating class of Canyon Ridge High School in Twin Falls, Idaho. She served as Student Body Vice President, a Student Senator, varsity volleyball captain and varsity offensive player of the year, and was on the honor roll all four years. She received many prestigious awards that she is very proud of. Among these are the Civilian Service Award for Devotion and Service from Twin Falls County Sheriff Tom Carter, United Dairymen of Idaho Outstanding Individual Scholastic Award, the first senior from Canyon Ridge High School to receive the KMVT/First Federal Academic All-Star Award, and four time consecutive regional winner of the Daughters of the American Revolution essay contest, one year as a state winner. KellyAnn is planning to study Business Law and Italian.
Mary Anna Billingsley graduated from Captain Shreve High School in Shreveport, Louisiana. She served on two state executive boards as District IX President of the Louisiana Association of Student Councils and as Secretary of State for YMCA's Youth and Government. Mary Anna was the Debate Team Captain, Mu Alpha Theta President, National Honor Society Vice-President, Class Vice-President for four years, Z-Club Chaplain, and a Gator Cheerleader. She was selected to the All-State Debate team and voted Miss Captain Shreve by the faculty. Mary Anna is interested in studying English and Political Science.
Meredith Carey graduated from Parish Episcopal School in Dallas, Texas, where she was Honor Council President, National Honor Society Vice President, and Editor in Chief of The Parish Episcopal News. She was a four-year varsity softball player and served as Captain her senior year. Additionally, Meredith regularly volunteered with the Dallas Ronald McDonald House Teen Board and at Nightlights, an organization that looks after children and teenagers who have a variety of special needs, once a month. Meredith is a Meadows Scholar and in the Honors program. She plans to study Journalism.
Christopher Carrillo graduated from Saint Anthony Catholic High School in San Antonio, Texas. In his junior and senior years, he was Class President, and Captain of both the Swim Team and the Drum Line. He swam on the Varsity Swimming Team for four years, co-founded the Ultimate Frisbee Club, and was a Senior Officer in the Young Oblates community service club. Chris also played drums in the Jazz Band, served as the Music Director of the Salve Catholic Retreat Program, and was honored as a San Antonio Express News Student of the Week. Chris plans to major in Environmental Engineering.
Cassidy Curtis graduated with honors from Westminster Academy in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where she was Student Council President, National Honor Society Secretary, Founder and Editor in Chief of her school’s online newspaper, Homecoming Queen, and Varsity Cheerleading Captain. She also was a member of Spanish National Honor Society, Quill and Scroll National Honorary Society, Key Club, and Junior Statesmen of America Secretary and Treasurer. She has organized and contributed in many community service projects, including mission trips to Malaysia, Singapore, Costa Rica, Germany, and Austria. Cassidy is also a Hilltop Scholar, a Pre Law Scholar and plans to study Journalism.
Melody Davis graduated from Lake Brantley High School in Orlando, Florida where she graduated third in the Class of 2011. She served as Senior Class Vice President, Varsity Soccer Captain her Junior and Senior year, Captain of the Varsity Tennis Team, President of the English Honor Society, and Homecoming Court Chairman for 2 years. Additionally, she was a member of the National Honor Society, National Beta Club as she served on the Leadership Board, Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society, and Vice President of the National Science Honor Society. Melody is also a BBA Scholar and is in the University Honors Program. She plans to study Business and Spanish.
Elizabeth (Liz) Dubret graduated from John Paul II High School in Plano, Texas, where she was Senior Class President, a National Honor Society Officer, and a member of the Recruitment Leadership Council. Additionally, she was a member of Mu Alpha Theta, French Honor Society, Student Council, the Ambassador Club, and the President’s Club. Outside of the classroom, Elizabeth participated in the Collin County Ballet Theater as a Senior Company Member. Elizabeth plans to study Electrical Engineering.
Kaylee Dusek graduated as Valedictorian from Royse City High School in Royse City, Texas, where she served as Speech and Debate president, Student Council president, and Book Club president. Additionally, she was the two year captain of the Varsity Soccer Team, Interact Club vice-president, National Honors Society secretary, and actively participated in UIL academics and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She was selected as RCHS “Top Dog,” earned three year district honors in soccer, and was the 2011 Texas state runner-up in informative extemporaneous speaking. Kaylee is also a Lyle School of Engineering IDEAL scholar and plans on majoring in environmental engineering.
Monica Finnegan graduated from Visitation Academy in St. Louis, Missouri where she was Editor-in-Chief of the School Newspaper, Vice President of her Venture Crew for three years, and member of Student Council. Actively working in Youth in Government, she was on the Executive Board and elected Speaker of the House for the State of Missouri. Class President and elected Spirit Representative of her class, she also headed a school-wide service day. Additionally she was a state qualifying Varsity Swimmer, Student Ambassador, Member of the National Honor Society, and given the St. Jane de Chantal Award for Service at her school. Monica plans to study Business and Political Science at SMU.
Taylor Goerke graduated from St. George’s Independent School in Collierville, Tennessee. As an active participant in a number of school organizations, she served as Head Prefect, Honor Council member, Make-A Wish Club co-President, Peer Leadership Council member and Freshman Class President. Chosen by her school’s students, faculty and administration, as Head Prefect, Taylor served as the school’s highest ranking leadership role model. She was awarded both the Emerson Thoreau Award for Special Merit and the Reflection of Light Award. On the athletic field, Taylor played on the varsity lacrosse and golf teams. Taylor was selected her junior year by Polar Bears International as one of fifteen global students to study the effects of global warming on polar bears in Churchill, Manitoba, Canada. Currently Undecided, she plans on incorporating her love of travel and community involvement through Corporate Communications/Public Affairs with a minor in Spanish.
Katelyn Hall graduated from The Hockaday School in Dallas, Texas where she received the Sudie Duncan Award for leadership and community commitment. President of her Youth Government chapter, Katelyn also spent much of her time leading the school newspaper and serving as a student ambassador. Katelyn helped develop the mentoring component of TEDxKids at SMU and volunteered regularly with the Ronald McDonald House Teen Board and at Genesis Women’s Shelter. At SMU, Katelyn is a Meadows Scholar and a member of the University Honors Program. She plans to study Journalism, Spanish, and International Relations.
Emily Hegi graduated from R.L. Paschal High School in Fort Worth, Texas where she was the Senior Class President and the president of the senior student council. She was also Co-Editor-in-Chief of the yearbook. During her four years as a varsity swimmer, Emily was a regional qualifier each year. She was also a designated youth group leader at Southside Church of Christ. She was voted “Miss Paschal 2011” and was also the recipient of the D.A.R. Good Citizenship Award for Fort Worth and Tarrant County. She was also a member of National Honor Society, the Paschal Society for Academic Excellence, and the Homecoming Court. In addition, she was voted as her school’s Prom Queen. At SMU, Emily plans to study Civil Engineering.
Ryan Herrscher graduated from St. Thomas' Episcopal School in Houston, Texas, where he was Editor-in-Chief of the school's award-winning yearbook, Director of Lighting for the school's theater, an Ambassador for the admissions office, and Head Acolyte for St. Thomas' Episcopal Church. He competed as a lawyer on the Mock Trial team and as a tenor drummer in the school's 5-time World Champion Bagpipe Band. Outside of school, he started and ran a non-profit organization to raise money and support Tay-Sachs Disease research in memory of his sister. He is a Boy Scouts of America Order of the Arrow Brotherhood member, as well as a proud recipient of the Eagle Scout rank. He is a private pilot interested in pursuing a career in airline management; at SMU he is planning to study both management and finance.
Kevin Hess graduated from Saint Louis Priory School in Saint Louis, Missouri where he was the editor in chief of the weekly school newspaper, captain of the distance track team, played Varsity soccer, and was the lighting crew chief for the school plays. Additionally, he was an AP Scholar with Distinction, a volunteer summer school teacher, and National Spanish Exam award winner. He is enrolled in the Honors Program and plans to study Business.
Preston Hutcherson graduated from Canton High School in Canton, Texas where he served as Student Body President, National Honor Society President, and Drum Major of the Canton High School Band, leading them to the finals of the UIL State Marching Contest. Preston was also a two-time UIL Academic state qualifier, competing in Social Studies and Current Events. Additionally, Preston was involved as a Student Council representative, played in the Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band, and was voted "Mr. Canton High School" by the faculty and staff. Preston is a SMU Pre-Law Scholar and studies political science and economics.
Carissa Laughlin graduated from Visitation Academy in St. Louis, Missouri where she served as Student Council President. She was also a Student Council representative freshman year as well as Class President her sophomore and junior years. Serving as a member of the National Honors Society as well as an Ambassador to the school, she founded the House System at Visitation Academy. Carissa was recognized by her school as a St. Louis County Outstanding Student Leader as well as the recipient of the Principal’s Award, Salesian Leader Award, and Alumnae Award her senior year. Carissa is a Business Scholar, Pre-Law Scholar and is in the University and Business Honors programs. While at SMU, Carissa intends to major in Business and attend Law School.
Samantha Liles graduated at the top of her class from Sulphur High School in Sulphur, Oklahoma. She was named to Oklahoma Academic All-State after serving as junior class Treasurer, senior class Vice President, Business Professionals of America President, varsity cheerleading co-captain, and yearbook editor. She was the leading scorer on the Quiz Bowl team, resulting in an All-State Honorable Mention. Additionally, she participated in National Honor Society, Student Council, and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Outside of school, Samantha was a dance student for 15 years and a beginning tap teacher, as well as a leader in her church’s youth group. Samantha is an Honors Program student and BBA Scholar, and plans to major in Marketing and minor in Women’s Studies.
John David (J.D.) Mahaffey graduated, as the 2011 Class Salutatorian, from Greenwood Laboratory School in Springfield, Missouri. He was an active member of Student Council, serving as Freshman Class Representative, Sophomore Class and Junior Class President, and culminating his senior year as Student Body Vice-President. Other leadership roles held by J.D. included Key Club President his Junior and Senior year, Fellowship of Christian Athletes President, and National Honor Society President. John David was actively involved in Boy Scouts, attaining the highest rank of Eagle Scout. He lettered in varsity tennis and track all four years of high school. J.D. has a passion for volunteer work and has worked extensively with the PGA Tour, the American Cancer Society, and many others. He received the President's Volunteer Service Award for completing over 600 hours of volunteer work throughout his high school tenure. John David has an interest in world cultures and has traveled to Ecuador and Scotland to study abroad. J.D. plans to study Business, Spanish, and International Relations at SMU.
Alex Novak graduated from The John Cooper School in The Woodlands, Texas where he was Student Council President, Philosophy Club President, a Junior Statesmen of America member, the Senior Class Commencement Speaker, and held lead acting roles in Musical Theater since his Sophomore year of high school. Additionally, Alex was a four year varsity soccer goalkeeper who led his team as captain his Senior year, and played on the varsity golf team his Junior year. Outside of school, Alex played club soccer, was an active Young Life member, volunteered locally through the National Charity Roundtable and worked at American Eagle Outfitters. Alex is a BBA Scholar and Hilltop Scholar. He plans to study Business, Spanish and Philosophy.
Bailee Petty graduated from Sulphur Springs High School in Sulphur Springs, Texas, where she was involved in Student Council, National Honor Society, Thespian Society, and Key Club. She was Class President for four years, a member of the 2010 Homecoming Court, active in the Senior Leadership Class, and Valedictorian of the Class of 2011. She was the 2010 Hopkins County Dairy Festival Queen and Vice President of the High King Klub, a community service organization. She was senior captain of the cheerleading squad and was involved in athletics all four years of high school. She is in the Hilltop Scholars program and plans to study Political Science and Philosophy.
Matthew Powell graduated as a Distinguished Graduate from iSchool High, a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math academy in Lewisville, Texas. His accomplishments include Student Council President, member of the National Honor Society, being selected to participate in the Navy Seabees engineering and construction camp and is a member of the Society of American Military Engineers. Matthew competed with the iSchool High robotics team that won first place in the Texas regional competition and fourth place in the state competition. Matthew loves playing sports and was honored to receive the Leadership Award for All Sports, as well as winning the 16 and under 5A National Championship and being awarded All-Tournament Team honors his junior year. He has travelled to Germany as a student exchange student and plans to study civil or mechanical engineering.
Sandra Sáenz graduated from Incarnate Word High School in San Antonio, Texas, where she was a two year member of the Executive Student Council as Parliamentarian and Vice President, a member of the National Honor Society, four year member of the Ambassador Society, French Club Vice President, and New Student Mentor. She was a TAPPS Regional Qualifying Varsity Soccer and Varsity Track member, Regional Qualifying Piano participant, State Qualifying Academic Team member, and was nominated to Who's Who Among All-American Scholars. Sandra has also been active in her church by teaming on different retreats and participating in missionary trips. She plans to pursue a degree in engineering while at SMU.
Julianne Scheidler graduated from La Costa Canyon High School in Carlsbad, California where she was a member of the National Honor Society as well as the California Scholarship Federation.
She was an active officer in ASB/Leadership and played volleyball for all four years of high school. To unite her passion for volleyball and community service, she organized a breast cancer awareness volleyball match each October which resulted in raising funds to support breast cancer awareness. She will continue playing volleyball at SMU and her major is undeclared at this time
Luke Seeker graduated from St. Michael's Catholic Academy in Austin, Texas in the top ten percent of his graduating class. He was the freshman, sophomore, junior and senior class presidents, captain of the varsity Track and Football teams, and enjoyed Spanish Club and serving as a School Ambassador. Luke attended Boys’ State, 2010, representing his high school and earned an elected position in the House of Representatives. As an SMCA Varsity Track Athlete sophomore, junior and senior years, Luke was part of the TAPPS 5A State Championship Track Teams sophomore and junior years. Luke was a TAPPS 5A State Qualifier as a senior. Luke’s summer following graduation from high school has been spent as an Emergency Medical Training Services student. He hopes to receive his state certification following his course completion and volunteer as an EMT-Basic on campus.
Will Slack graduated from Airline High School in Bossier City, Louisiana, where he was the Editor-in-Chief of the school newspaper, President of the Octagon Club, Vice President of National Honor Society, a Freshmen Mentor Program Council Member, creator of the Freshmen Tutoring Program, and Valedictorian of the Class of 2011. He was chosen as Bossier Parish’s Student of the Year. Outside school, Will spent much of his time interning with The Hub: Urban Ministries and serving the homeless population of Shreveport, LA. While at SMU he plans to study Business Management and Mathematics as a BBA Scholar and a member of the University Honors Program.
Alexandria Strickland graduated from Vanguard College Preparatory School in Waco, Texas, where she was a National Merit Commended Scholar, Junior and Senior Class President, Vanguard Club Co-President, and treasurer of the Chemical Society. Additionally, she was a peer facilitator, a member of National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society, Spanish Club, Greek Club, Book Club, the Mock Trial team, and the yearbook staff. She also participated in varsity sports; she played varsity volleyball for three years, where she served as Captain both her junior and senior year, played varsity softball for two years, and spent two years on the varsity cheerleading squad. Outside of high school, she was very active with the National Charity League, through which she was involved with many volunteer programs, including Habitat for Humanity, the Family Abuse Center, and Compassion Ministries. At SMU, Alexandria plans to study Electrical Engineering and may specialize in Biomedical Engineering.
