New 2009 Hunt Scholars

Ted Belden graduated from Saint Michaels Catholic Academy in Austin, Texas, where he was Class President for four years, President of the SGA, Yearbook Editor, a newspaper reporter and Captain of his Varsity Lacrosse team. He is planning to study business and economics.
Allison Bereswill graduated from Episcopal High School in Houston, Texas, where she was Student Body Vice President, served as Chairman of the Discipline Council and a member of Honor Council. She was a Student Council class prefect her Freshman, Sophomore and Junior years. She ran on the varsity track team for four years, winning five relay Conference Championships, breaking three school relay records, and winning the All Conference award in the 400m. She was a member of National Honor Society and organized her chapter’s peer tutoring program. She also volunteered with SOS, her school’s community service club and chaired many school events and fundraisers with student council. Allison is in the Honors Program and plans to study Business.
John Bryant graduated from St. Mark’s School of Texas in Dallas, Texas, where he was Editor In-Chief of the yearbook, Managing Editor of the literary magazine, President of Student Council Publications, and a four year varsity lacrosse starter. He was also Chairman of a week-long charity event that raised over $29,000 in meals for the Austin Street Centre. Outside school, John operates a small print design business and in the summer, worked as a boys’ camp counselor at Camp Longhorn and underwrote loans for a finance company. He plans to study business and political science.
Tarcila Castillo graduated from Irma Lerma Rangel Young Women’s Leadership School in Dallas, Texas, where she was Student Council President, Class Vice President, and Key Club President. She is planning to study Computer Science.
Andrew Colton graduated from Ensworth High School in Nashville, Tennessee where he was Student Body President after having served as sophomore and junior class presidents. He was an All State Defenseman and Captain of the Varsity Lacrosse team. Andrew led the youth service at his church and the pep rallies at his school. He attended Boys State and is a proud Eagle Scout. At SMU, Andrew plans to study business.
Jack Dawson graduated from Episcopal Collegiate School in Little Rock, Arkansas, where he was Student Council President, Member of the Honor Council, Senior Class Treasurer, and co- captain of the varsity golf team. He was an active member in his church youth group and a founding member of his Guy's Bible Study. He loves to play golf, basketball, soccer and guitar. He founded a spirit group, The Cat Pack, at his high school and loves the SMU Mustangs. He is planning on studying Business and Advertising.
Jean Paul Destarac graduated from T.K. Gorman Catholic High School in Tyler, Texas, where he was class salutatorian, Student Council Vice-President, Communications Director, and Director of the Middle School Student Council. He was also President of the Ambassador Club, Vice-President of the Biology Club, Fundraising Chair of the Pre-Med Club, Captain of the Tennis Team, and also played Varsity Soccer and was on a Swimming Team. He won the Presidential Volunteer Service Award, Kohl's Kids Who Care Award, the Rotary Youth Leadership Award, and was a Distinguished Recipient of the Prudential Community Service Award. He plays the soprano saxophone, piano, bassoon, and alto saxophone and was the Section Leader for the Band and 1st chair for all four. He won a 1st Division on all 4 instruments at State this year, was the Top Talent winner for Piano, the Most Outstanding Musician, and was chosen for the All-State Band. He was invited and attended the Juilliard School of Music Summer Jazz Program. He was a High School Aerospace Scholar and won 1st place in the American Mathematics Contest. He was a member of the National Honor Society. He is in the Honors Program on a Pre-Dental track.
Max Diener graduated from Plano West Senior High School in Plano, Texas, where he was Student Government President. He is planning to study business.
Kevin Do graduated from Plano East Senior High in Plano, Texas, where he was Senior Class President, National Merit Scholar, AP Scholar with Distinction, Vice President of the Key Club, an East Guard, and an Academic Decathlon team member. He is an Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America and a jury foreman with the City of Plano Teen Court as well as a National Honor Society member. At SMU, he is planning to study economics and history.
Roza Essaw Graduated from Wylie High School, where she was President of her Freshman, Sophomore, Junior Class President and Student Council President her senior year. She also competed in speech and debate for three years and served as captain of the team. She was vice-president of Council of International Affairs, a member of the National Honor society, Mock Trial Team (competed as an attorney), Friends of Rachel Club she also participated in numerous volunteering activities. At SMU, she aspires to double major in Corporate Communication and Public Affairs (CCPA) and Political Science.
Kent Fischer graduated from Central High School in San Angelo, Texas, where he was Vice President of his school's chapter of National Honor Society, a member of his school's Believers in Christ group, and the founder of a campus wide “Adopt-a-Spot” program. He competed at the regional level of the UIL Science competition his junior and senior years, and represented his school at Texas Boys' State. He is planning on studying history and Spanish.
Luke Friedman Graduated from Marmion Academy where he was co-Valedictorian. He was a four year varsity soccer player, a two year captain, four-time all conference all academic, three time all conference, two time conference player of the year, and as a senior made the all state team, and the all state all academic team. Additionally, he was involved with the Spanish Club, which he was president of for two years, the math team, which he was captain of his senior year, JROTC, serving as the S-1 Adjutant Officer his senior year, and he was also Senior Class President. He also was involved with Campus ministry, working on many service projects, as well as serving as an Extraordinary Minister and Kairos Retreat Leader. He was a member of his school's chapter of The National Honor Society and Spanish honor society. He plans to major in Financial-Accounting with minors in Mathematics and Spanish.
Joe Hesse graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Muenster, Texas where he was the President of his school's National Honor Society chapter. He was an active member in local community service, largely because of his involvement in Boy Scouts of America, in which he reached Eagle rank. In his high school he participated in the robotics team and was a state finalist in track and cross country. He is currently undecided on his major, but takes interest in the sciences.
Paige Janke graduated from Brookstone School in Columbus, Georgia, where she was Junior Class Vice-President and Student Body Secretary. She is planning to study business.
Kathryn Johnson graduated from Andover Central High School in Andover, Kansas, where she was Student Council Vice President, Junior Class President, and the Newspaper Co-editor. She is planning to study communications and international studies.
Mitch Miller graduated from Cistercian Preparatory School in Irving, Texas, where he was captain of the Varsity Football team, the Senior editor of Fall Sports for the school year book. He was the recipient of the Tom Hillary Award at his school for an outstanding scholar athlete, and he was the Sonic scholar athlete of the week as well. He participated in Down Syndrome Guild (DSG) events all four years of high school where he helped in the Special Olympics and helped set up for DSG dances. He is planning to study business, spanish, and sports management.
Elizabeth O’Neill graduated from The Hill School in Pottstown, Pennsylvania where she was Editor-in-Chief of the Hill News, a prefect in the dormitory, and co-captain of her Fall, 2008 League Championship Field Hockey team and her Winter, 2008-2009 Basketball team. She is extremely interested in the medical field, especially service work, having traveled abroad to five third-world countries in southern Africa, and closely observing the health care system in Botswana. She also was a student contributor to the Morning Call, her local hometown daily newspaper. At SMU, she plays on the Women’s Club Lacrosse Team, and plans to study Biochemistry, Spanish, and Journalism. She plans to become involved with the Daily Campus and is looking into starting an Operation Smile chapter for SMU.
Jennie Pearson graduated from Eunice High School in Eunice, New Mexico where she was Student Council President, National Honor Society President, class valedictorian, and active in her church youth group. She was the captain of her varsity volleyball and basketball teams and won State Championships in the 100 meter and 300 meter hurdles. She is currently in the Pre-med program, is majoring in English with a concentration in Creative Writing, and minoring in Biology and Applied Physiology.
Jane Rizzuto graduated from Cherry Creek High School in Greenwood Village, Colorado, where she was Student Body President. She also served as Junior Class President, Sophomore Class President, and Freshmen Class President. She received the Danforth Leadership Award and was selected for the Leaders of Tomorrow Award. She was Captain of her nationally ranked Pom Squad, and she was a member of National Honor Society and French Honor Society. She has volunteered at COMPA food bank, Ronald McDonald House, the Denver Inner City Parish, and the teaching of special education students to dance. In addition, she served as President of Spirit Task Force and was chosen to serve on the Principal Selection Committee. At SMU she is currently involved in the Emerging Leaders program, a member of the SMU Pom Squad, a member of Best Buddies, and plans to major in finance.
Eric Sabandal graduated from Park Tudor School in Indianapolis, Indiana, where he was Student Council President, before that sophomore and junior class president. He also was a High honor roll student and active member of the French, Spanish, Environmental clubs at his school. As a member of the varsity soccer and lacrosse teams, Eric also served as Captain of the lacrosse team and all-state player. He plans to pursue studies in Business, French, and Spanish at SMU.
Mackenzie Schott graduated valedictorian from St. Scholastica Academy in Mandeville, Louisiana. She served as student body president and spent two additional years on the school’s executive board. She received the prestigious Dale Hawley Student Council Award, which is presented to the five most outstanding student leaders in each state, recognizing their service on the state, regional, and national level. Elected as the State Parliamentarian by students from high schools all over Louisiana, she served the Louisiana Student Council Association in 2008. She also represented her student council district as District II President. She has volunteered for causes such as Habitat for Humanity, Special Olympics, events with the Catholic church, and Hurricane Katrina rebuilding projects. She was Vice President of her school’s Spanish Club, as well as a member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, and Excalibur. She received a Varsity letter in volleyball and cross country, and she received the Emile Navarre Service award for her service to her school.
Dylan Smith graduated from Mid-Pacific High School in Honolulu, Hawaii, where he was the Editor-in-Chief of the school's newspaper, student council member, and a team captain of the Varsity Canoe Paddling team. He is an avid photographer, and has displayed his work in galleries across Honolulu. He was a member of the National Honor Society and Holomua Honor Society. He is planning to study business and English.
Jamie Trenkner graduated from Canterbury High School in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where she was the sports editor of her school newspaper, a member of Key Club, student coordinator of the school blood drive, and captain of the varsity volleyball team her junior and senior years. Jamie was also a peer tutor, senior prefect, member of the softball team and a State Championship basketball team while remaining on the Honors List. Jamie was named Academic All-State Honorable Mention for volleyball and softball her senior year as well as being a Commended National Merit Scholar. Jamie plans to major in business and communications at SMU.
