New 2010 Hunt Scholars

Claire Bauman graduated from Seven Lakes High School in Katy, Texas where she served two terms as Editor in Chief of the school newspaper, Junior and Senior Class Vice President, Student Body Secretary, and National Honor Society Historian. She was a three-year varsity volleyball player, and served as Captain her senior year. She was a member of the District Superintendent’s Advisory Council, a member of Seven Lakes’ UIL Academic Journalism team, and a member of many clubs including Mu Alpha Theta math honor society and S.O.S. her school’s community service organization. She was honored with the outstanding senior girl award, or Miss Seven Lakes 2010, voted on by faculty and staff. At SMU, she plans to study Political Science on the Pre-Law track.
Max Benassi attended Cathedral Catholic High School in San Diego, California. Realizing his internal drive as a leader he became involved in the Associated Student Body as Sophomore Class Secretary and as a Junior he participated in Los Locos, the premier school spirit organization. Senior Year he served as Senior Class Vice President. Max was also very involved in athletics, wrestling four years, three of which were at the varsity level. Placing 5th as a sophomore, 3rd as a junior, and 2nd as a Senior at the San Diego CIF tournament, he and his Co-captain led the team to an overall 2nd place at the CIF tournament. Outside of Wrestling, since the age of 5, Max has been a member of the Kids Korps Organization, which focuses on enabling the youth to give back to the community. He spearheaded the Kids Korps Chapter at school and organized the Build-a-Bike, an event that brings volunteers together to assemble bicycles for children whose parents are overseas in Iraq. At Southern Methodist University, Max is planning on studying Biomedical engineering, and will possibly earn a degree in Business or Law afterwards.
Marissa Braun attended Park Tudor School in Indianapolis, Indiana. As an active participant in several different school organizations, she was a member of Honor Council Freshman and Sophomore year, Vice-President Junior year, and President Senior year. On the track team, she earned a Varsity letter her freshman year and Conference championship title for high jump her sophomore year of the three years she ran. She qualified for state all three years she competed in DECA Business Club. Performing in every school play, musical, and choir show, Marissa is a member of National Forensic League. As President of Habitat for Humanity for two years, she raised all of the funds and united the community for the build. At Southern Methodist University, Marissa may major in Communications with a Human Rights minor.
Olivia Cassidy graduated from John Paul II High School in Plano, Texas, where she was Junior and Senior Class President, Homecoming Queen and a two-year Social Officer on the Cardinal Belles drill team. Additionally, she was a member of National Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society. Olivia is in the Honors Program and plans to study Cinema Television and English.
Zane Cavender graduated from Mildred High School in Corsicana, Texas, where he was Student Council President, National Honor Society President, Drama Club President, Senior Class President, and Salutatorian of the Class of 2010. He was a UIL State Champion in Journalism his Sophomore year and State Runner-Up his Senior year. He played football and was involved in athletics all four years of high school, and orchestrated various community service projects through National Honor Society and Student Council. Outside school, Zane owns a mowing business and is involved in local organizations. He plans to study Political Science and Public Policy.
Matt Cohen graduated from Alamo Heights High School in San Antonio, Texas where he was Sports Editor of the newspaper, Senior Class Officer, four year member of the Student Council, Regional Qualifying Varsity Track Member and Captain of the Varsity Football team. He is also an Eagle Scout, a member of National Honor Society and is planning on studying business at SMU.
Paul Curry graduated from Byron P. Steele II High School in Cibolo, Texas, where he was Vice President of his class for the past two years years. He was also President of the Thespian Society, Vice President of Junior Statesmen of America, and an active member in his schools big brother program, PALS. He was voted "Mr. Steele" and has played several leads in the schools productions as well as in One Act Play competitions. He attended American Legion's Boys State where he was then elected to Texas Boys State Supreme Court. Paul has also been active in his church, serving on Youth Leadership Council and teaming on several retreats. He is planning to study Political Science and International Studies.
Billy Embody graduated from Carrollwood Day School in Tampa, FL. Along with being the Salutatorian of his class, he was also the Student Council President and National Honor Society President. Billy served on the newspaper staff as sports editor for four years during high school. Billy was also the starting Quarterback of the football team for four years and was All-Conference his last three years. Billy threw for over 6,000 yards and 80 touchdowns during his career which included a 9-2 record his senior year. Billy is passionate about his involvement with the Jimmy V Foundation; He has volunteered at numerous events and organized events at his school that raised money for cancer research. He served on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Student Advisory Board. He will be walking on the SMU football team and is planning to double major in Journalism and Sports Management.
Cassie Freeling graduated from a very small town in Oklahoma. Ft. Gibson is where she first planted her roots by graduating in the top of her class and leading as Student Council President. Her senior year she was extremely active: continuing her 4 year run as Cheerleading captain, Swimming captain and was All- State swimmer, leading role in the musical of Footloose, and started up her schools Beta Club! She plans to have and amazing first year at SMU studying Psychology and specializing in children.
Zachary Friske graduated summa cum laude from Carroll Senior High School in Southlake, Texas, where he was Senior Class Vice-President. He also was a Varsity Marching Band Drum Major, a Carroll Green Jacket Student Ambassador, a National Honor Society Senator, a National Society of High School Scholars Ambassador, a Boy Scouts of America Order of the Arrow Brotherhood member, as well as a proud recipient of the Eagle Scout rank in the Boy Scouts of America. He volunteered as a community academic tutor for under privileged children, worked at Fort Worth’s Beautiful Feet homeless shelter and soup kitchen, and served as the director of the theater department serving his church’s Vacation Bible School and religious education program. He plays trombone and has received superior ratings at State competitions throughout all four years of high school. He graduated as a Success Scholar, a Distinguished Achievement Scholar, an Altrusa DFW Community Service Scholar, a National Honor Society Scholar, a Carroll Education Foundation Scholar, an Advanced Placement Booster Scholar, and a Southern Methodist University Dedman College of Humanities and Sciences Scholar. He is planning to explore a pre-med track while studying biochemistry and business.
Chase Grieve graduated from Marin Catholic High School where he was Senior Class President and Vice President of the National Honors Society. For the past four years to the present, Chase is one of six delegates to the United Nations Environment Programme’s Tunza Youth Network representing the United States and North America. Currently, Chase has been promoting and expanding the Tunza Youth Network, an organization that helps combat climate change on the local, national and global levels, with other youth from the across the United States and Canada. Chase is also a member of the Baha’i Faith and plans to major in business and international relations.
Lauren Gurley graduated from Spain Park High School in Hoover, Alabama, where she was a Senior Class Officer and captain of the varsity cheerleading squad. She was a member of the National Honor Society, and received the Summa Cum Laude and Crossed Swords academic awards. Lauren was involved in her school's Spanish Honor Society and Peer Helping, completing many community service activities. She was selected as a student representative for the Best Practices Committee and attended Girl's State. During the summer, Lauren travels as a UCA Cheerleading camp instructor. She is a member of SMU's Red Cheerleading Squad and plans to study Business and Spanish.
Meredith Jones graduated from Birdville High School in North Richland Hills, Texas, as Valedictorian of her class of over 400 students. Meredith was also Senior Class President, Varsity Choir president and Senior Planning Board President. Meredith was selected by her classmates to represent them in 2009 as Homecoming Queen. During her junior year, she served as Junior Class President and Varsity Choir Secretary. Meredith was a member of the Vocal Edition, a select choir at Birdville, and she also choreographed for the group. During her junior and senior years, she was a member of the National Honor Society and was a freshman mentor. As a freshman cheerleader at Birdville, Meredith was selected Most Spirited Cheerleader and also was selected to be an NCA Cheerleader that year. She then participated in the Rawkin’ Hawks’ Varsity spirit group her senior year. Meredith was in the ensemble of Birdville High’s musical her junior and senior years and was choreographer of the musical her senior year, earning two nominations in 2010 for Betty Buckley Awards, one for best ensemble member and one for best choreography. Outside of school Meredith competed on a pre-professional competition dance team throughout high school, earning numerous solo and group honors, and was an active member of her youth group at North Richland Hills Baptist Church. She is planning to major in business and dance at SMU and is looking forward to investing herself in SMU.
Mary Ellen Kerr graduated from Captain Shreve High School in Shreveport, Louisiana, where she served as Vice President of her Student Council, named a National Gold Council of Excellence by the National Association of Student Councils. She also served as President of the Z-Club, a girls' service organization at her high school, and served as the Student Representative on the Louisiana State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education her senior year. Mary Ellen plans to study Civil Engineering.
Taylor Lioce graduated from Randolph School in Huntsville, Al where she was class president both her junior and senior year. She participated in several volunteer organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, Junior Grace Club, Appalachian Service Project and the Optimist Club in which she was named the Student of the Year for South Huntsville’s Chapter. She also organized and founded an Operation Smile chapter at Randolph. In addition to school and volunteer work, Taylor is an accomplished dancer of 15 years. At SMU, Taylor plans to pursue degrees in Corporate Communications/Public Affairs and Psychology.
Carson McCain graduated from Decatur High School, where she was Vice President of her class. Throughout her time there, she was actively involved in organizations such as National Honor Society, Students Against Destructive Decisions, and Friends of Rachel. She participated in Decatur's Mock Trial program, competing at the state level all three years of participation, and competing at the National Mock Trial Competition in 2008. Her passion throughout high school, however was theatre. She was president of Drama Club, a varsity member of the International Thespian Society, and contributed whether onstage or off to every show DHS had to offer during her four years there. She is planning to study theatre at SMU.
Beionny Mickles graduated from The Academy at the Lakes Day School in Land O’ Lakes Florida. He was an active member in student government and served as the student government and senior class president in his final year of high school. He was also involved in many high school extracurricular activities such as starting quarterback of the football team, starting point guard on the basketball team, and four high school musical productions. Beionny has also devoted much of his time to service recording over 150 hours of community service donating his time to such organizations as Metropolitan Ministries and the Teen Empowerment Council of Tampa Bay. Beionny plans to study sports journalism and communications.
Devean Owens graduated from Parkview Arts and Science Magnet High School in Little Rock, Arkansas where she served as Senior Class President and Vice-President of the National Honor Society for the Dance Arts. She was also a member of the National Beta Club and National Honor Society. She was a Student Council representative for her class her Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior years. As a member of Student Council she was chosen to be a Junior Counselor for the Arkansas Association of Student Council’s Junior High Retreat in 2009 and Summer Workshop 2010. Her senior year she served as a mentor for Project T.H.R.I.V.E.-an Algebra tutoring program. In her community, she was a member of Arkansas Commitment-Leadership Development for African American Students and Little Rock Mayor’s Youth Council-a community service organization, where she served as Public Relations Coordinator. She participated in the Pulaski County Youth Services Internship Program where she interned at the Downtown Little Rock Partnership in 2008 and 2009. She attended Arkansas Girls State and returned the following year as a counselor. As a member of Arkansas Commitment she was chosen to intern at Stephens, Inc. in the Research Department. She plans to study Advertising and Psychology.
Daniel Poku graduated from McNeil High School in Austin, Tx, where he co-founded and served as the President over a community service organization called the Heroes of Tomorrow, which has now become a nonprofit organization. He was awarded Youth Volunteer of the Year for two consecutive years having developed and implemented original service projects to help over 100 homeless youth and their families. He also created a Drug Intervention Program that he has co-developed with a University of Texas Professor of Social Work and Director of the BSW program. Outside of school, he helped launch a tutor program for Middle School kids to better prepare for TAKS, and enjoyed giving speeches to youth about the importance of aspirations.
Amanda Presmyk graduated from Carroll Senior High School in Southlake, Texas. She was an active member of Student Council, serving on the Texas Association of Student Councils' state board of directors as the 2010 annual conference coordinator for over 4,500 young leaders from across the state as well as being campus President both her sophomore and senior year. She was also a member of the leadership corps for the Carroll Dragon Marching Band. Outside of school, Amanda has been a member of Girl Scouts for 11 years, earning both her Gold and Silver Awards, and has also worked on numerous charity and community events. She plans on studying Journalism and Cinema-Television.
Matt Reyes graduated with honors from Mid-Pacific Institute in Honolulu, Hawaii, where he was the Founder and President of the Business Club, President of the Habitat for Humanity Club, and Captain of the Varsity Basketball team. He was also inducted into the school's prestigious Holomua Honor Society. Matt is also a BBA Scholar and is in the University Honors Program. He is planning to study Finance and Economics.
Cole Riddell graduated from Pleasant Grove High School in Texarkana, Texas, where he served as Student Body Vice-President, PGTV Executive Producer, and was chosen to represent his school at Texas Boys’ State. Cole was a three-year starter for the Hawk Varsity Baseball team, making three straight trips to the Texas state tournament. Cole’s senior year the Hawks claimed the 2010 3A State Baseball Championship, the first in school history. Cole was also a member of the Student Council, National Honor Society, Quill and Scroll, Interact, Science, and Spanish Clubs. Cole was chosen Who’s Who Outstanding Athlete his senior year. He is an SMU Pre-Law Scholar and plans to double major in Broadcast Journalism and Sports Management.
Melanie Rosin graduated from The Kinkaid School in Houston, Texas, where she was Editor-In-Chief of the literary magazine, Senior Class Representative of Kinkaid Cooks for the Community, an Admissions Ambassador, and captain of the volleyball team. She was also chosen to be on the steering committee of her school's division of Habitat for Humanity, where she was the Volunteer Coordinator, and was a member of Youth Against Cancer and her school's Governing Council, where she served as the Student Service Committee Chair. Outside of school, she volunteered at Texas Children's Hospital and was a tutor for at-risk youth. As well, she has received eleven publications and ten writing awards. Melanie is in the Honors Program on a pre-law track and plans to major in business with a minor in English.
Jilian Rossow graduated valedictorian from Central High School in St. Joseph, Missouri. She served as Student Body Treasurer, and organized many school events and fundraisers including the largest community blood drive, and Cancoming, which raised over $10,000 for local charities. She was a member of National Honors Society, co-captain of the varsity tennis team, President of DECA, a Congressmen Sam Graves Leadership Delegate, and actively involved in Younglife. She was also the student founder of Central Connect, a program aimed to decrease the dropout rate by increasing involvement in extracurricular activities. She volunteered as an elementary summer school teacher and reading assistant, as an advisor to the United Way Allocations Committee, as a vacation bible school teacher, and as a church camp counselor. Jilian is in the Honors and BBA Program and plans to study Business.
Michael Saunders Graduated number three from Life School Oak Cliff. He served as captain of his varsity soccer team as well as the class president both Junior and Senior year. He was nominated president of student council as both a Junior and Senior and through his position was privileged to host Senator Florence Shapiro at the 2009 Education Summit. He was a member of the National Honor Society and was also named a member of Phi Theta Kappa, the International Honor Society of the Two Year College. He ran track both Sophomore and Junior year, breaking and setting the school record in the steeplechase. He also played football for four years throughout high school and was named the All-Academic Football Player of the year and Second Team All Academic All-State. He enjoyed volunteering in his community and helped chair multiple events and fundraisers at school. Michael is a Hilltop scholar in the Pre-Law Scholars program and aspires to study both law and Spanish. In his spare time he loves playing soccer and learning to play the guitar.
Savannah Lee Stephens graduated from Palmer High School in Palmer, Texas, where she was President of the Student Council, President of National Honor Society, and an officer of Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She was a founding member of the Debate Team. She went to UIL Academic Regional Competition all four years of high school, and competed at the State UIL Academic Meet for three years. Savannah’s Junior year, she won second place in Persuasive Speaking at the State Meet, and won second place her Senior year in Lincoln Douglas Debate. She was invited to attend the UIL Elite 100 Conference, as well as other leadership conferences both on the state and national level. She chaired many charitable events and school activities through her work with Student Council, National Honor Society, and FCA, as well as volunteering with Meals on Wheels. Savannah plans to study History and attend Law School.
Brittani Strickland graduated in the top 5% of her class from American Heritage School in Delray Beach, Florida where she was two-time National Honor Society President, Class President, Student Government Co-President, a three year officer of the Key Club and founder of the school’s recycling program. In addition, Brittani set the school record for community service hours, totaling over 1200 hours. Brie has dedicated over 500 hours traveling to Costa Rica, Fiji and Thailand during the summer to build houses and teach to local children. She was a two time varsity letter winner in basketball and was nominated to the prom court her junior and senior years. Her distinctions include AP Scholar, DAR Good Citizen, Distinguished Recipient Prudential Spirit of Community Service, Top Orator at Key Club state convention and a National Scholastic Art Golden Key in Computer Graphics. She is in the Honors program and plans to double major in anthropology and marketing and minor in human rights.
Kelsey Thomas graduated from Ensworth High School in Nashville, Tennessee, where she was Class President her Freshman, Sophomore, Junior years, and Class Senator her senior year. She was Captain of the varsity cheerleading squad for four years and coached athletes in wheelchairs with the ABLE Youth cheerleading squad. She participated in Youth Legislature, ran on the cross country team, and tutored at Youth Encouragement Services. She was also chosen to participate in the Hugh O'Brien Youth Leadership Conference. While at SMU she plans to study Business.
Chase Wade graduated from Crandall High School in Crandall, Texas, where he was Editor-in-Cheif of his school's nationally recognized newspaper, The Pirate Press, Managing Editor of his school's yearbook, Executive Vice President of student council, Vice President of the Envrionmental Club, Tennis Team Captain, a member of Mu Alpha Theta, a UIL Academic team member, and also helped organize many events in the school as well as his community. During his senior year, Chase was named Texas High School Journalist of the Year, National Journalist of the Year Runner-Up, and was also chosen to represent the State of Texas for the creator of USA Today, Al Nueharth's, Free Spirit Scholarship and Conference. Chase is planning on studying Marketing and Advertising while at SMU
Jeff Whelan graduated with honors from Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach, California, where he was the ASB Vice President and served as the Student Board Member of the Manhattan Beach Unified School District. He served as the ASB Commissioner of Community Relations, where he was responsible for organizing and executing community outreach projects. He was the Founder and President of Invisible Children United, which raised money to aid secondary schools in Gulu, Uganda. He was an active member of Model United Nations, earning 12 Best Delegate and Outstanding Delegate awards. Additionally, he served as an intern for his district's state assemblyman, and was a Life Member of the California Scholarship Federation. He plans to study Political Science, Business and Human Rights at SMU.
Alissa Williams graduated from Brazoswood High School in Clute, Texas where she served her school as Student Body President. She was elected by her peers to be a Student Council class officer her Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior years. She was a four-year regional qualifying swimmer on the varsity swim team, ran on the varsity track team, was a National Honor Society member, and was a varsity choir member with a lead role in the school’s performance of “High School Musical”. For four years she was one of the news anchors for the daily school announcements, and was a staff writer for her school newspaper. She was also selected to be a teen correspondent for CBS’s Great Day Houston, where she filmed a segment for and appeared live on the show. Ali is in the Honors Program and plans to double major in Journalism and Business, with a minor in Political Science.
