AUG 03 MON      KIGALI, RWANDA
You will be met at your hotel  and depart for Gitarama genocide sites.

This afternoon, visit Les Enfants de Dieu in Ndera (Kigali).  Les Enfants de Dieu is a non-profit secular organization established to assist and transform the lives of street children in Kigali, by alleviating their hardships and providing them with the opportunities to mature into valued individuals who can be reintegrated into society and contribute their skills, knowledge and ideas. The organization runs a residential care center for approximately 130 boys between the ages of four and 18 in Ndera, a suburb of Kigali. The facilities include dormitories and classrooms, as well as a kitchen, multipurpose hall and playground. The project employs 15 staff, including four teachers, a nurse, counselor, social worker and project manager.

If children are willing to leave the streets, the organization's care center removes them from the harsh realities of street life by providing them with food, shelter and basic healthcare, and then they begin a rehabilitation process that focuses on mind, body and spirit. The children have access to health, sports and vocational training, as well as general education and counseling to deal with stress and trauma. The ultimate goal is to reintegrate each child into Rwandan society.

The center is focused on providing a child-centered service, meaning that a tremendous amount of responsibility is given to the children in regards to the management of the whole project. The children organize elections each year to nominate leaders from amongst those living at the center to deal with various aspects of life at the center, including administration, education, health and sports and culture.   As a result of this process and responsibility, children feel more respected and empowered to create real change. In addition, although the project is made possible through fundraising, the center has several income generating agricultural initiatives aimed at moving towards financial sustainability.

AUG 06 THU      KIGALI / GITARAMA / BUTARE

Make and early start this morning for Gitarama, and visit Urukundo Home for Children.  Hope Made Real / Urukundo Home for Children. Located in Gitarama, Urukundo Home for Children is a safe refuge for orphans of genocide and HIV/AIDs run by Arlene Brown, a charismatic 77-year old American. Known as "Mama" to the 40 girls and boys at Urukundo as well as the surrounding community, Arlene arrived in Rwanda a decade ago as a recently retired computer technician.

Not content to simply sit on the couch all day and play grandmother, she started to work in refugee camps and discovered her endless love for the children of the country. Hence, when her contract ended, she was not ready to go back to the USA but decided to found the Urukundo Home for Children.

Characteristically, 'Urukundo' means love. Mama Arlene is eager to share her life story as well as her plans for expanding the home to accommodate more than 100 children. Since renting facilities for the children was very expensive and the dependency on donations a heavy burden, Mama Arlene took the bold step of investing in the purchase of an entire hill on which visitors and donors are now helping to construct new homes, a chicken farm, a basketball court and other facilities.

After an introduction to the plight of orphans in Rwanda, Mama Arlene will guide you around the Home for Children. She will then explain her initiatives for an after school tutoring program and a community health facility, before inviting you to share a meal at her little guesthouse. A visit to Urukundo is an inspiring look at the difference one person's courage can make in the lives of others.
