Dallas Regional Office

 BACKGROUND:

Founded in 1933, the IRC is a global leader in emergency relief, rehabilitation, protection of human rights, post-conflict development, resettlement services and advocacy for those uprooted or affected by violent conflict and oppression. Domestically, our 23 offices across the country ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency. The mission of the IRC Dallas office is to assists local refugees to rebuild their lives, restore their sense of dignity, and fully participate in their new communities by providing compassionate support, resources, and programs tailored to their unique needs. 

REQUIREMENTS:

ˇ         A minimum of 15-20 hours per week commitment;ˇ         Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s or post-graduate degree program;

ˇ         Effective communication skills and the ability to communicate and collaborate with a wide variety of individuals in a professional manner;

ˇ         An interest in international and refugee issues;

ˇ         Be reliable and flexible;

ˇ         Willing to learn about cross-cultural communication and ethnic backgrounds of clients; and

ˇ         Willing to adhere to IRC volunteer and workplace policies.

 

All internships listed are UNPAID.

Employment Intern: Research potential employers for clients, attend job fairs, assist clients with job applications, set up “mock” interviews, and accompany clients to job interviews as needed.

Immigration Intern: The Immigration Department of the IRC assists refugees, asylees, and victims of human trafficking with their applications to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).  It includes family reunification petitions, green card, and citizenship applications, applications for replacement of documents, and applications for travel documents.  Intern would help prepare applications for submission, communicate with diverse cliental, and perform other general office assistance.

Resettlement Intern:
Work with newly arrived refugees, learn about their cultures, assist casework staff with reception services to clients, including setting up new apartments; assisting clients with applications; teaching clients how to cash checks and use public transportation; assisting clients with medical appointments, grocery shopping, and school; preparing forms and paperwork; filing and data entry; and handling logistics and transportation to assigned appointments.  Must have reliable transportation.

Resource Development Intern: Assist Resource Development team in planning and carrying out various community events to increase local awareness of the IRC in Dallas and to contribute to the fundraising goal; assist in sharing program successes with the community by carrying out the public relations plan; assist staff to research, write, edit and submit grant proposals; and design and employ mechanisms so that refugees are involved in various aspects of the Development Department.
