Basic Group Life Insurance/WorldWide Travel Assistance
SMU provides Basic Group Life Insurance through Reliance Standard at no cost to you. The plan is designed to provide financial assistance to your family in the event of your death.
Your beneficiary(ies) will receive one and one half times your annual base salary up to a maximum of $750,000. If you are a SMU Post Doctoral Fellow, your beneficiary will receive $10,000.
As part of this benefit, SMU employees have access to the WorldNet Travel Assist Program, which provides comprehensive international travel assistance services.

Summary of what you need to do
The Life Insurance Beneficiary Designation form is included in the packet of First Day Forms emailed to the employee. When completing this form, be sure to list the individuals you wish to designate as beneficiaries of your Basic Group Life Insurance. If you have not named a beneficiary, or the named beneficiary is not surviving at your death, any benefits due shall be paid to the first of the following classes to survive you:
• your legal spouse;
• your surviving children (including legally adopted children), in equal shares;
• your surviving parents, in equal shares;
• your surviving siblings, in equal shares; or, if none of the above,
• your estate.
You may change your beneficiary at any time by re-submitting the form, found on the HR Website/HR Forms, to the Benefits Office.
