SMU offers a number of PPOs (Preferred Provider Organization), which are administered by Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Texas (BCBSTX).
Each plan covers a wide variety of medical services, including office visits, prescription drugs, and inpatient and outpatient care. Our PPO medical plans allow you to choose either in-network or out-of-network providers. Click each of the following to learn more:

Exchange Visitors on a J visa as either a visiting scholar, professor, or researcher, and their dependents (J2) are required by the Department of State to carry and maintain appropriate medical coverage while at SMU. Contact the Benefits Department for specific instructions.
Care provided by a provider participating in the BCBSTX PPO Blue Choice network is paid at a higher level and you usually have no claims to file.

If you choose to receive care from a provider that does not participate in the BCBSTX PPO network medical benefits are lower, out of pocket expenses are higher, and you may have to file a claim to receive reimbursement for covered expenses.
