Established in 1920, the Edwin L. Cox School of Business offers undergraduate, graduate, and executive development programs designed to prepare students for lifetime success in the modern-day business world. The school ranks among the top 50 business schools nationally and internationally, according to such publications as BusinessWeek, U.S. News & World Report, Forbes and The Wall Street Journal. Cox School of Business was renamed in 1978 to recognize its major benefactor, Edwin L. Cox, Sr. (’42), of Dallas.

Dedman College is SMU's largest school and offers Bachelor’s, Master's and doctoral degrees in the humanities, social, and behavioral sciences, mathematics and natural sciences. More than 35 undergraduate majors and 50 minors are available through the college’s 16 departments. Dedman College was named in 1981 for its benefactors – the late Robert H. Dedman, Sr. ('53), and his wife, Nancy McMillan Dedman ('50), of Dallas.

SMU's School of Law, founded in 1925, was renamed Dedman School of Law in 2001 in honor of its benefactors – the late Robert H. Dedman, Sr. ('53), his wife, Nancy McMillan Dedman ('50) and their family. Dedman School of Law offers the Juris Doctor, Master's and Doctor of Law degrees, and a J.D. degree through an evening law program. The school takes pride in an active Student Bar Association, moot court and mock trial activities, five respected law journals, six legal clinics and several international law programs. According to a survey published by D Magazine in May 2005, more than one-third of "leading lawyers" in Dallas are SMU law graduates.

Meadows School of the Arts is known as one of the nation’s leading arts schools. Offering a rich variety of arts studies, the school brings together art historians, dancers, musicians, singers, artists, and actors to study side-by-side with future advertising and communications professionals, journalists, and cinematographers. Meadows arts students have the advantage of a conservatory atmosphere in a liberal arts setting. The school is named in honor of benefactor Algur H. Meadows and The Meadows Foundation of Dallas.

The School of Theology was founded in 1911 and was one of SMU’s three original schools. Master’s degrees are offered in divinity, theological studies, church ministries, sacred music and religious studies; doctoral degrees are offered in ministry and religious studies. Named Perkins School of Theology in 1945 in honor of Joe and Lois Perkins, it is one of 13 seminaries of The United Methodist Church. Its students and graduates come from many denominations and its 5,000 alumni serve in all 50 states and in more than 30 countries. Perkins is committed to preparing women and men for faithful leadership in Christian ministry.

The School of Education and Human Development includes undergraduate teacher certification programs, professional Master’s programs, a new Ph.D. in education with a current emphasis on literacy and language, the Institute for Reading Research and the Gifted Students Institute. The human development area includes the Center for Dispute Resolution and Conflict Management, Master of Science in Counseling, Master of Liberal Studies, Noncredit Continuing Studies, and Youth and Pre-College Programs. SMU’s School of Engineering was founded in 1925, making it one of the oldest engineering schools in the Southwest. The engineering curriculum goes beyond a strong academic and technical foundation by providing engineering leadership courses to prepare students for opportunities in management and technical entrepreneurship. Students gain work experience through the undergraduate co-op program, corporate-sponsored internships and scholarships, and other domestic and international internships.
