University Mission
Southern Methodist University’s mission is to be a leading private institution of higher learning that expands knowledge through research and teaching. Among its faculty, students, and staff, the University develops skills and cultivated principled thought and wisdom. The University is dedicated to the values of academic freedom and open inquiry and to its University heritage.

Board of Trustees
The Board of Trustees consists of 42 members who serve four-year terms and meet four times a year. They are responsible for setting policies and guidelines for the operation of the University. SMU is one of the few universities in the nation to have a student serve on both the board and on various board committees.

President
As president of SMU since 1995, R. Gerald Turner is leading an era of unprecedented progress at the University. The Campaign for SMU: A Time to Lead raised more than $542 million for academic programs, scholarships, professorships, and student life programs. Under President Turner’s leadership, a new strategic plan is guiding the University’s advancement, and the Centennial Master Plan is transforming the physical profile of the campus.

Provost
The Provost serves as the University’s chief academic officer, overseeing the degree granting schools as well as the libraries and other academic programs. The Office of the Provost has responsibility for the University’s educational and research programs, enrollment and strategic planning, institutional research, academic budget and decisions regarding faculty development, promotion, and tenure.
